Yes, it's made for multiple lights so it has a higher amperage rating allowing it to work for a fan.

The dimmer switch, the box it goes in and the extension cord were all purchased separately.What do u mean box???? Enlighten me oh holy one. How many black wires are coming out of the dimmer? 2 or 3? Cuz I had one With only two black and the green grind wire. How did you wire it to work. Cuz I have ac to dc power supply due to the pc fan I thought about a potentiometer or rheostat but when I put my rheostat on there was to much resistance in the circuit and my rheostat strafed smoking. So hiw would I do this with an ac to dc power supply involved? Which side of th power supply do I cut number one and number two how do I wire it in with the dimmer switch

As long as the hot is having to run through the dimmer it should allow you to adjust the power.
You may need to turn down the adjustment screw on the front of the dimmer to adjust for the power difference.

But mAke sure it's on the dc side right? Because I have laptop powersupply as my fan powersupply it's output is rated at 12vdc with 4.0amps my fan is rated at 4.8 amps 12vdc. Let's roleplAy ..... so I have the hot wire on the dc Side
Cut it in half splice one side of the cut hot wire to one of the black wires and then the same thing to the other black site with the other side of the hit dc wire? Did that mak any sense??

Have to just jump in here and ask ....
To the people who say dimmers can't be used on ex-fans .....show me evidence that it harms the motors or reduces the lifespan of a motor on an ex- fan .
Myself and MANY people i know use dimmer switches on fans and have never had any problems ... some have had the same dimmer and same fans for years .
Now heres the thing ..... When i was putting mine together , I asked around first to be sure , Also looked high and low for actual evidence of anyone who ever had a problemwith a dimmer connected to a fan ... and i can't find any ..... So .... I'm starting to wonder if this is just some myth thats sprouted from Hydro stores that just want to sell you more speed fan controllers ?
It's very easy for people just to repeat what they read or are told .... How about some proof ?
Just sayin ...
Lets weed out the myths .

It's the exact same thing as a fan speed controller. All you're doing is regulating the volt/amps going to the fan.
A higher amperage dimmer switch is recommended for larger fans though as the amps can short out the switch.
I'd toss you some rep Vento but I have to spread more.

so im gonna be doing a diy cool tube i just bought the mogul ceramic socket. i know i wire it to an orange extension cord. but how does it attach to the ballast. ballast is on order here in a few days. HOPEFULLY lol

why a 6 amp..the fan is usualy only using 1 amp or 2. and a dimmer isnt the right equipment either. fan will die sooner than is suposed to that way. man 6 amp is more than my 600 watt ballast suks.
