it shouldn't even be a question of course dig a hole in the ground thats what it's there for that potting outdoors shit is fer the birds

Somebody mentioned groundhog problems as a reason to use pots outdoors. But I would suggest simply lining the hole with half inch chicken wire as a solution against groundhogs or gophers or moles. You should leave at least a foot of the chicken wire above ground as well.

Where I live we have to do this with all our plants or the gophers will destroy them.
