you need a 70watt hps ballast
I'm going to the local hardware/electrical store tommorow,
want to save $ by building my own ballast
I was asking about igniters/capacitors etc...

a ballast contains the transformer+capacitor+ignitor

man, be safe...70watts aint shit unless you growing in a 1-2 sq ft space. even if u have cfls, not if u do or dont, but if you do, look at the cost of everything you have and look at a cheap 400w hps on ebay. those little 1-20 $ items will run up fast lol, i think its silly seein people with such crazy cfl arrangements.
I hear you but I have a credit rating of 0. no credit for affordable ebay products and buying a 400w setup with all the trimmings locally is just out of my price range. I wish I could afford a proper setup... still, I have faith in my plants' ability to grow with or without it...
i picked up the light for $3 if you live in my area you'll realize that electronics equipment is so pathetically cheap, I could probably build a microwave oven for 5% of the price is costs to buy a new one ...jokes aside, thanks for your opinions... in total a 400W HPS setup here would cost me $500 and i'm not joking about that.
I live in south africa.. btw... so import duties for high grade electronics out-of-the-box is just rediculous... old electronics and components are cheap because they've out-lived their sell-by value...

ahh i wondered what the name meant, anyways, take the hit, dont get a 400 tho, get a 1000w. you will make your money back plus tons to smoke plus some spendin money all of that after only 3 months, 2 months if u already have em vegged. is weed a commodity there or is it like a spiritual thing there?

When i first grew i got around 10 of these street light 70W Hps's at the dump for little cash.. forked maybe 20 dollars max. Wiring was easy and simple since it came with the ballast, all it required was some wiring and grounding to a power cord. Make sure you have proper gear to stay safe, wire connectors and electrical tape, ext.

Imo for a 4x4 space which most people use, a 600W will go a long way, less power with few plants it shows big yields.
I know the extra cash will bring more yield but you need to understand my position, I'm growing for the fun and to make use of the hundreds of bag seeds I'm already saving, growing the plant itself makes me happy and I don't need to do so for any reason.
Weed is common here, it costs me 1$ a gram and I get good sensi herb, hash is rare but I buy my weed at the same place I buy my groceries, seriously, I go in the shop for my food and theres a guy on the corner selling bags... legislation is lax also, you need to be carrying 115grams to get arrested, anything less is a 20$ fine.
