I just used nice crystal cat liter. Its way cheaper and works just as good. Yes you want to fill it to the top, because if there are empty spaces the air will just take the easiest path....the path with no filter material. Mine cost me less than 25 bucks and all i have to do is replace the cheap ass cat litter in it.

Yeah, you need to fill it. I built two of those a while ago, and I used them and they work flawlessly. I don't remember the exact weight of carbon required. I used the 6"-8" reducer, so the carbon was an inch thick all the way around, and I made it 18" long.

A little math:

The volume of an 18"x8" cylinder is 288 cubic inches.
The volume of an 17"x6" cylinder (inner part not filled) is 153 cubic inches.
288-153=135 cubic inches.

So you need ~135 cubic inches of carbon if you make an 18"x8" version with a 17"x6" inner core. Now all you need to do is find out how much activated carbon weighs by volume and you'll know how much carbon by weight you need.

Nice,sounds good.

What size grow room was that for.I am doing a grow in a closet only 2x4,what lenght would ya recommend.Live in a built
up area so cant have ANY smell get out,ya know!
