Actually you have to be very precious on rolling the string. you must roll it in very tight line then the cut will be more precious. I had quite uneven top cut and there has appeared crack in one place. So the idea is straighter the cut - more durable the cool tube.

That is a great way to cut glass, plus rep to you! I have been looking at different methods of cutting the bottom off a glass jar I have and couldn't figure out the easiest way, but this lighting the thread is so simple I was trying to score it and all with a stain glass cutter. Great job!

I have been wanting to post some of my DIY stuff cause I too am also all about the Macgivering, but have been to paranoid to post pics on here especially with the photo meta data and serial numbers attached to the pics. I wouldn't want to have to get rid of my only camera for whatever reason, but great job on the project as a whole.

if you want to make a DIY cooltube with a bigger light.. (up to 600w hps) you can buy a pyrex bread baking tube on ebay for $10-20. no glass cutting required ;)

You can buy disposable digital cameras for between $12. and $20. that would work great for this!

All you have to do is load the picture up into MS paint...save it as a BMP, then save it back as a jpg and all the information gets stripped out of it :D

Lol this is true so that is why I tried the slight scoring of the glass with the hot water /cold water treatment and worked great, I am now the proud owner of a glass tube :hump:.

You can also buy them easy bake rounds on ebay perfect for cool tubes
You can go buy a bake round tube for 20$ or less, but I just got my tube for 2$ from the dollar store. Besides Macgiver didn't always have a store nearby supplying paperclips and bubble gum, he would never cave into just buying a tube, he'd be ashamed lol now get out there and Macgiver shit!! not go out a buy what you need that's just not exciting lol

Love the light, I'm kicking a 600w. cool tube in a 2x3x4' area and thought I was just about on par.
Thoughts?
i run a 600w in a 4x3x5 and its fine :) your space might be more suited for a 400w but if you're on top of your temps than i dont see why not.

if you're unsure of what your temps are gonna be like i'd opt for the 400w. just my opinion based on my experience :)
