I just got finished building my diy cool tube and it turned out really nicely so i figured i post some fairly detail instructions on how i built it
Items
Pipe straping
alumin. tape
huricane glass(larger size)
2x 6in to 4in reducers
rubber weather stripping(I got mine from an auto parts store.
nuts and bolts.
I had a sun system light that i pulled apart and made it into a remote ballast.
Cut a piece of pipe straping long enough that you can fold it over and still be long enough to touch each side of the reducer.
Pic 1
Mount the socket to the pipe straping. Insert the socket pipe straping into the reducer and bolt it twice on each side.
You should get something that looks like pic 2 and 3.
Insert the smaller end of the reducer into the hurricane glass and measure how far down you want the bulb to be inside the glass. Once your statisfied make a mark level with the top of the huricane glass on the reducer. Take the weather stripping and stick it to the reducer where you made your mark. Repeat on other side.
Pic 4
Take alumin. tape and tape the reducer to the glass.
pic 5
If you need to mount a reflector...take the pipe strapping and wrap it around the reducer. You'll see in my pic that i used electric tape...nut and bolt would be better but i ran out. you'll want to make sure and leave about 4 inches on each end of the pipe strapping sticking up from the point where you connected it. repeat for other side
pic 6.
Mount your reflector to the pipe strapping thats sticking off the reducer.
pic7
All done. All in all i think this cost me ~$25.
Hope this helps someone.
