DiY LED - Cree CXA3070

I ordered the lights in March just before the cxb's came out and put them together in May. I used 8" long 5.886" heatsinkusa with 9 cxa3590 CB's, one meanwell 120 and a 185 at 500mAh. I also have the 90 degree angelina reflectors. It's heavy, but it hangs just fine in a 3x3 tent and it's only ever luke warm. I have it about 9" above the canopy. The plants its tending to seem to be doing quite well but I'll add some blues at 700mah next time around for at least the first two weeks of flowering as the plants seem to be behind on trich production. The solid state relays have since been taken off as one of them was doa and I didn't have time to wait for a reship. Once I have veg cobs and/or early flowering blues integrated I'll stop being lazy and whip up a nice arduino controller.

I haven't been following this thread since March, but I'd like to know if there are any advances I should know of, and what I might change in upgrading to cxb's (3070's or 3590's?). To be honest while I enjoy using the light, my ultimate goal is to manufacture them for sale alone, or as part of a fully automated (set and forget), climate controlled, light adjusting, tea dispensing monster of a personal grow setup (either 2x2 or 3x3).

Event though I just missed the cxb's for this one, I'm pretty pleased with myself. Let me know what you guys think! = ]

pd...to bb... maybe your lamp need a rectangular piece of wood and a hammer to repair damage on lateral angled piece (near to heatsink)...;) ...ardino nano ...or mini... rtc with battery... SSRs... drivers hlg... leds reflectors ...wow:fire: i like it..

I am running in soilless medium. I have a diy soil sensor that works great so far. Found it on the internet google gardiuno to see the design on that. It is cool in that it uses to digital inputs to put current in the soil, instead of using just one lead to apply the current that the analog input will read. This is supposed to stop the electolysis, which seems to be a huge problem with soil sensors. I haven't got anything installed yet, but it will be happening in the next few weeks. I have a yun that I going to use. It makes getting on the IOT a lot easier. My programming isn't the best, but I learning as I go. I would like to see some more automation/arduino type stuff around here. I plan on a fully automated system that I only have to fill tanks on. I have a sketch that I wrote that controls a sprinkler valve, it opens when my soil gets to my predetermined moisture level, watering the plant that needs it. But I still have a ways to go. I am in my last semester of school this summer, trying to finish it up. So I don't have a lot of free time to play with it as of now.
 
I'm glad you guys like the light! For me the total cost was about $860. That can certainly go down if one were to use cheaper cob holders and reflectors. It can go up if you add blues.

Still accepting advice on CXB's!

I'll make a thread when my automation project is sorted (be back in a month or two?)

Newbie in led, read through most of the thread and of course got me inspire to make my own DIY led. Big shout out to all of you who are active in this thread and give out so much usefull information for people like me. I appreciate any answer you will take the time to write me.

So Im just running what I was thinking of buying to make sure everything makes sense. Im going for a led that will suit 2 plants in a 2x1 area. I will have a 730nm flood light for the night out.

I wanted to use for the body (I would take with all the options) 80$

Your over thinking this,if your just looking for flowering the 3070's will kill on their own. If you want some thing to veg and flower with than you may want a mix of something like 5000k COB's with some 630 to 660 added for flower.

I was adding the 660nm cause I thought it would help the plants wake up in the morning and activate the hormones a bit more. But in essence my maths as per driver was okay ? And no 365 for the UV ?

I think it's wise not to go cheap on reflectors.

Not really, you'd better fully load the driver. What you planned was about 115-120V and the driver provides up to 215V. Same story with 3x CXB3070.
You can hook up 6x CXB3070 on the driver or choose the 1400mA version which is fine for 3x CXB3070. On the other hand, 200W of quality LEDs over 2'x1' area is total overkill (I'd aim for half) so you might be looking for a smaller driver or a larger space.

And yeah, 3000K + 730 nm at lights out sound like the most reasonable combo to me.

Now i wanted the cobs to run at about 50w each. Now to work out the watts the Cobs will run at; do i multiply the 36v x 1.4a? If so that gives me my desired wattage of about 50.4 watts.

The confusion i have, is ive read people running them at 700ma to achieve 50watts from the cxb 3590's. Is this due to them running the 72v cobs instead of the 36?

You are right, most of us buy the 72v cxb version, cause it was on the market first but if you drive the 36v version at 1.4 you get 48.8w per cob at 51.7% efficiency same as 72v at 700ma!

Does anyone have a link to a supplier currently selling Ledil 90 degree angelina reflectors (in the USA)? Im having a hard time tracking these down. I would prefer not to use Alibaba or some chinese distributor.

Don't buy the model 839 unless you can get a compatible holder, it only fits aag stucchi holder. Model 838 is the same reflector with mounts for ideal or ledil clamp...maybe bjb?

When plants get close, reflectors become useless with high power cobs. I always take them off once plants get within a foot..

great for high ceilings and open areas..

@Positivity thanks for the warning on those! My current setup is 9 x cxa3070AD @1400mA. Mounted to the heatsinks using Ideal - 50-2234C. The fixture footprint is 30" x 30" and i feel like I am throwing a lot of photons at the wall, 12" -18" over the canopy (4x4 grow space) I have already had a bleaching event in late veg with my strains, so I am cautious about pressing the fixture above the canopy. My goal is to utilize reflectors to aim the light were I want it while allowing a greater distance between the light and canopy for air flow from oscillating fans.

It was mentioned in the DIY cob reflectors thread that just using IDEAL -50-2100AN will give me a slightly narrower beam angle than using nothing at all. So i guess im open to any reflector around 90deg that can clip onto the ideal-50-2100AN. If anyone has any recommendations for commercially available reflectors.
