thanks for the response jubiare. So i figured out i have 12 square feet total and 40w per square foot is 480 watts for my entire grow. I did some math and im going to make 2 lights, both would have 4 rows of (40) 3w diodes = 480 watts ea!! So 960w total :) other then the diodes and panel what kind of parts would i need to run a light this strong? Drivers etc. Thanks j, much love
cool, i assume you know 40 emitters dont mean 40watts. Yes you'll need the drivers, meanwell for best compromise; it all depends what you want to drive the leds at, dimmable or not etc.

Ok, you'll need to look at drivers now; I personally went for Chinese imported ones for now. I was looking for 550Ma for the reds and 680/700Ma for the all the rest, I found some 550Ma but I don't like the little frame voltage it gives (like Output 45v - 70v, little options to play with numbers of leds .... when the 500Ma output 15v - 70v, so much more possibilities).

You can source those on aliexpress or similar or ebay ... there is better drivers around than this, but it works out more expensive and/or you need more drivers because the majority of them only go up to 45v

I personally wouldn't play with other than cree/osram first, lumiled/ledengin/bridgelux to follow ... maybe in a few years the other companies will have better quality/efficiency ...

But you can def get a average good panel with Chinese or something like that emitters! But I suggest you only go for the best ones! the thing is you cannot really trust what they say on datasheets ... you'd better check them out for intensity and all! I don't know much about good emitters from other companies ... there sure are some ... actually one of them is helixeon (good whites, not cheap by the way!). The only person I know with a good knowledge on all the market is heraserhead

How many drivers it depends on how many chips ... you can do calculations once you know the voltage of each, how many whites blu reds etc .... you are looking for constant current drivers of course

Note the RoHS, so they properly are what they claim.

^^^^ Beware of the honesty of most Chinese merchants. You have to do your homework before you buy those 420greendream.

Yes, but I was thinking about this from the "Led under the microscope thread" where there seams to be a difference of the ones with and without RoHS

If I go to the Shenzhen hanhua opto co website and search for 660nm
besides having some juicy 100W plant grow LED's when i select a 3W 660nm LED with ROHS the information says:
chip number 1
chip arrangement 1 chip
chip brand CREE, Epiled, Bridgelux.

So maybe S.H.Opto is just mounting chips from others. They also have a '660nm 1w/3w high power led with golden supplier' what ever that means,
where the brand name says 'HHE' and the picture could look like the red chips i got.
If I where to buy many LED's I think it would either be from brand name on mouser, Newark to play it safe
and treat my chips as they we rare collectors items and stored them in a suitcase with cut outs to the led's when not in use or on display. :-)
or from someplace like SatisLED either on e-bay or there dot.com for a cheap way to get some powerful light witch longevity is questionable,
but then again if they last 6 years what will the LED world look like in 6 years.

since there are going to be 160 emitters on each panel i am doing to do 120 red and the other 40 would be the other colors. how many drivers would i need for something like that?

If anyone has a good website of someone who sells led diodes and isnt some chinese bullshiter out to get my money, id greatly appretiate it.

This is the highest number of LED's on one driver I've seen,(in this class)

Constant Current 680mA Driver for 10-18pcs 3W High Power LED (10-18 *3W Driver)

And it all depends on what color(voltage) the LED's has, if the driver can run 10(blue) or 18(red) as Jubiare pointed out,
so it all has to add up, and maybe 160 isn't the right number but around there, and do you want
to mix the colors or have a kind of veg / flower switch and so on.

Greandream, do you wanna consider Osram? Am not saying Cree coz you'll look at spending more ... but Osram? Or someone will have to chime in with some Asia or something good quality emitters, hopefully they know what they are talking about. You said money wasn't a problem? I would know where to source osrams for some less than average

I missed that one, did not see the output voltage in the spec,
I just figured that 18 was max based on the LED's with the lowest voltage and 10 with the highest.

That's cool, I know because I own one (haven't tried it yet, had an other source of drivers and they looked better built ... but those ones are well cheap ehehe)
