DOES TOPPING INCREASE BUD YIELD?

I am coming to the end of my first grow. In the meantime, I have cloned and rooted some babies in preparation of my next small crop. There are several sources I have found (at rollitup and other sites) dealing with the "how-to" and "why" of topping plants.

I want to know about the overall plant yield of topless vs natural. Does a topped plant produce more bud and less shake or is the yield the same and the plant is just shorter by topping?

THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT AND EXPERIENCES........

IMO, topping, fimming, SCROGGing will increase yield. The flatter the canopy the closer the light can be and the more event (and intense) the light is on the budsites.

And even if you don't top..you should prune all of the lower branches off if you are growing plants over 18" tall...or under low light conditions of any kind. (lower branches become clones here so it doesn't hurt (me) to cut em off)

good luck

But to the other side the more colas you have the harder it is to bulk all of them up

IMO a untopped plant will produce a massive bud this is the type of cola i desire

right on BT DT. I regret not pruning the lower branches of these I have flowering now. I read that you should not prune after like week 2 of flower. Is this true? Also BT DT, hit the poll, bro.

i topped our 2 blue mystic girls last grow. and it seemed that it was harder to get the colas to plump up below what was right under the light. so we ended up with tons of fluffy, small buds and then the tops were a lot more dense. however, we did have some nutrient burn too. so you never know what could have happend. but this time around, we are going to try not topping just to experiment, and learn.

i have trimmed 3 of my four girls to one cola.

the last girl was my strongest so i let her develope 4 additional bud tips.

i think she has about the same weight of bud, but the main cola is less dense then the 3 single colas. it's weight is just spread thinner over the plant.

i've not experimented with topping yet. hope this helps.

A friend of mine topped one of is his plants and when it came time to harvest he got additionally three small nugs for three nice hits. The problem he got after harvest, and when he was drying, was that mold got into the bud.
Anyone know if this often happens and if this can be cured during...curing?

Drying and curing are critical steps. How did he dry and cure the buds?

Mold happens when you bag or jar up the bud too wet... (I wait until I can snap a stem)

You can still jar it..you just need to let it air dry for 15-30 minutes every day after you put it in the jar....taking it out, letting it dry a bit...putting it back in and repeating the process until it is the dryness you desire.

FWIW..the plant in my avatar was a topped at the 4th node...then again at 8...then SCROGGED...filling a 3 x 4 screen and gave 225 grams from the one plant. I had 15 tops that weight a 1/4-1/2 oz on this one...and lots and lotsa smaller stuff.....

He just strung the outlaws up from a string high up to the ceiling near ventilation. I suggested he do this because I read it somewhere that topping would get bigger buds...which he got, the damn mold was a setback though. Should he have put them in a jar? Separated them from the stem maybe?

you say the buds were hung by ventillation but this doesn't mean the room was adequately ventillated. What is the humidity of the drying room? Plants will bump the humidity big time........

He dried them outside of his tent and inside his apartment, it's not a big place he has.. What is the best temp for drying the buds? He has, in my opinion, way to much temp inside for drying the outlaws. Can't remember how many degrees atm but it is high! for gardening, close to 30C if I remember correctly.

Check out the GrowFAQ at the top of this page. Click it and go to "Harvesting and Curing" and knock yourself out. Good stuff for you.
