no, but depending on where you are in the world and how your setup will be placed then it could certainly help you.

I didnt use one for a year but that was with an ac in the summer months. Eventually grabbed a new cooltube setup though. If you have not already bought your hood/ballast then just get the tube version now as it is way cheaper to get it in the beginning then paying 60 or more for just the tube later on.
