From what I know overgrow was the biggest weed forum ever before weed forums were normal. ICMag was created from the ashes of overgrow.com. After the whole investiagtion was over they tried getting as much server info as they could because of the treasure trove of information overgrow had. If you can imagine, it was the 90's and the internet was really exciting and getting better and better. Growers and breeders from around the globe could get in touch with each other and swap seeds, pollen, cuttings/clones and information so much faster than before. Breeders like Chemdog, Swerve, Chimera, BOG and many others found their fame at overgrow.com.
Well it the value of the site wasn't lost on LEO, and as it turned out their suspicious were right. They started monitoring certain member's private messages and found there was a lot of underground dealing going on. I was only a freshman in high school (199
when I discovered Overgrow so I wasn't in the know, but from what I've heard, it was practically a mail order clone and seed bank going on.
Well one day, I tried logging into my account only to get the old 404 error screen. I thought it was a mistake, but when I still couldn't log in a week later, I knew something had happened. Prop 215 had passed in California but weed wasn't nearly as accepted then as it is now and the site was taken down hardcore style lol.
They arrested the ste owners and confiscated the servers and computer hard drive.
There was a warning on a another site (i don't remember what it was) telling growers to bug out and go underground. So they did.
A lot of the great growers who were there never came back online from what I heard. It wasn't worth the risk for them. Shit was like the library of alexandria burning down, except for pot growers.
It was only after a few years that they were able to save some of the old information, which is probably why ICM kinda hold the monopoly on professional information imo. That's where the phrase 'overgrow the government' came from. It was sort of the rallying cry of the members.
Point is, that's not me being paranoid. That's a true story. Members were tracked. Arrests were made.
Cops are watching.
