yes religion is a form of control...so you dont need to be in a religion to believe in God, my family is catholic as well but i have a lot of things that i dont believe in the catholic sect, now im not here to discuss it if anyone would defend the catholics point of view i do respect other religion and thats just my 2 cents. if and if that people have change a lot of things in the bible its your faith in God that will bring you in realization sooner or later, but reading the bible is the only way we can know God, written or not written by humans it was inspired by God, it is Gods will to be existing for so many years. i am a Christian and i am proud to be a Christian. i am not perfect nor i consider myself a saint...i could be an asshole to anyone, i swear, i disrespect my parent at times i know i am a sinner...but believing in God, having faith in God and obeying the creator of things "God" is the only thing you need to believe in...heck even marijuana was mentioned in the bible Isiah 18: 4-5, or google marijuana in the bible.

I am just responding to the OP, I didn't bother reading through this thread. I am sure it's just 5 pages of religious argument. But when we discover intelligent alien life form that doesn't necessarily make all religions go out the window. Recently I read an article where it spoke of how the Catholic church has made a statement saying that alien life forms and god are not mutually exclusive. So the Catholic church either knows something we don't or it's a pre-emptive strike.

I can't seem to get my brain around talking snakes and shit. Not to mention if religion was absent from this earth we all really might get along for a change instead of butchering the hell out of each other since creation*.

*word used losely to represent the domination of man on the planet, upright walking ape, etc.

Personally ...I don't need to be made aware of aliens to know that god's not real. I figured out he was in the same boat as santa, unicorns and Fraggles many years ago.

I have read parts of the bible (I couldn't bring myself to read all of it) and sure it has moralistic value, but it was written by a man who wanted to write a story, nothing more nothing less. Lord of the Rings also has moralistic value, is it considered a religion? No.

i dont necesarily believe in "mutant aliens". if u do the math there are so many galaxies with so many planets in each galaxy. the chances are there is life on another planet. weather its micro organisms, bugs, etc...i dont think were alone and i think it will be a long time before the technology is strong enough to find it. we have four billion years to leave this planet. actually if you believe the myans im pretty sure were all gonna die 12/21/2012. i guess all this shit will go out the window then!

Religion has too many flaws to quote, prophecy is bullshit. Much like christianism or cathlocism, the religions of the middle east are ful of bullshit and lies. It is used as an excuse to fight. And make money, control people.

Unfortunately the human mind is fragile and weak, if someone tells us we are going to heaven or hell we will believe them. It is because of our fragility that the world is in the state that it is now.

Scientists have been trying to figure this out for years, from what I have read, they estimate that the closest possible (could be more) inhabited planet is roughly 200 light years away. Now, seeing as scientists have pretty much pinpointed the beginning of the universe, unless these other life forms have evolved and developed much faster than us, they will be roughly as advanced as what we are. And infact are prbably less evolved.

Also, being 200 hundred light years away, if they infact do have the technology to see our planet, they would be seeing things like underdeveloped cities and men running around with pincoats and wigs on. The signing of the declaration between the delegates to the Continental Congress, and the American Revolutionary war. Theywould be just as oblivious as to what is happening here, as what we are to the rest of the universe.

So, in theory, it isn't really possible for us to encounter extra-terrestrial life yet, or vice versa.
I totally agree that other life is out there though, it is a question of probability.
