The 55 watt 4 pin cfl can still be found at industrial supply sites. One ...1000bulbs has a web site and sells the 6500K that measures under 22 inches at 4800 lumens. You could fit four of these in a 24 inch four bulb T5 housing. Best of all they only cost $4.42 and will at least last a year without any noticeable drop off.
Department stores have been the biggest users of the fixtures that run the bulbs, I picked up some off of a craiglist add. I have been tempted to make a more dedicated jump to LEDs but after much research I think they still suck in the $$$$ department. Besides its fun to compare the final output of cheaper choices like this with your friend's north of $500 LED that looks like it belongs over a dance floor at a gay bar.
