The infantry in Vietnam was primarily used as bait. Sent into the jungle to find the enemy, make contact, hold them in place, & bring the Artillery & Aircraft to kill them. Most of the US casualties in Vietnam came from booby traps & walking into ambushes. The enemy chose when & where to fight most of the time...hell of a way to spend a year in the jungle....

Gunboats going up the river always seemed like sitting ducks to me also.
I can't imagine getting high and going into a situation like that. What was access to drugs like there?

I still consider my greatest victory from Vietnam was NOT returning home a junkie....but I found May Jane & she saved my life.....many times.
I couldn't get high out in the field, just couldn't.....but smoked like a freight train in base camp....it was quazi tolerated...Heroin & pot were everywhere.....

The river boats were the worst...there's only 2 ways to go, your trapped...right in their gun sights....

Were you a 60 gunner bro?......
I pulled every duty from AB, AG, gunner, and Weapons Squad Leader, but spent most of my time in the line. When we had 60's, every gun team had their own set of spare parts on hand for THEIR gun. Pistons, feeder pawls, extractors etc... It was the ONLY way to keep those pieces of shit up and running.

We had FN MAG-58's as well, and they fired twice as fast, three times as long without stoppages, and could suck up a fabric bandolier and spit it out without stoppage, but "big Army" wouldn't let us use them for anything other than special missions due to "political" reasons...ie $.

Eventually somebody pulled their head out of their ass and hooked us up with what became the M240B back in 93', which eventually became the Infantry standard.

That's another sore spot.

They sent most of those boys in the bush with only TWO fucking belt fed weapons per rifle platoon, which is criminal IMO. High explosive is THE number one killer, followed by belt fed weapons. Rifles are "meh" at best, and complete shit when used in any kind of sustained / automatic fire role.

To this day, the U.S. Army is STILL sending dudes into the fight under-gunned, and under-trained, when it comes to belt fed weapons. We're just fortunate enough to have been fighting retards that don't know shit either.

Hey buddy how's the GH property doing?
I predict it's hard to walk down the hallways from bud overflow & those cages on the 200's are filled out (:
Things are real hectic right now. They have some company in from out of town, and between catching up on biz & sight seeing, they have a lot going on. Things should settle down next weekend after they leave. I'll be sure to keep weekly updates going. But after 2 weeks I expect they have filled in considerably. The outdoor plants were lagging for a couple weeks before we got straw to cover the soil & help keep the roots cool. I believe that with the plant spacing & the full sun exposure the plants are receiving, they can still catch up & produce well. I think 5lb'ers are still in the picture. The plants in the greenhouse never skipped a beat and I'm sure that will be a tangled mess before long. There are a couple of plants in there might hit the 14' ceiling....:eyesmoke:

If you ever wondered about the effectiveness of a well operated belt fed machinegun, cut to the 7:00min mark of this video, & listen to what young Army sp4 Bill Beck did one sunny afternoon in Battle of Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam......He is credited killing an entire NVA Battalion with his M60.....:o
