Drugs and Rock and Roll - Any Personal stories?

I was around for the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti White Panther doings around 1968-71. Got to hang around "the house" on State St. when the MC5 was jamming. Was at the Grande Ballroom when Janis and Big Brother recorded their first album. That was the night I bought a couple tabs of acid from Arthur Brown ("I Give You Fire".

True story - In 1969 I helped bring the MC5 to Grand Valley State to do a benefit for Fran N******* who had been busted for obscenity. The 5's big hit was "Kick Out the Jams Motherfucker" and GV was in a real conservative community. The local prosecutor said he would jail the band if they used the MF word on stage. We got word to Tyner, the lead singer, and he started the song with "Kick out the jams Mister prosecuting attorney".

Anyone else get up close and familiar to rockers and dope?

BigSteve.

Wish I could have met Ronnie van zant. Skynyrd is my favorite southern rock band.

I went to a few concerts back in the day and after the day. I think some people may have been smoking weed.

Jethro Tull, Genesis and a bunch more.

Didn't the MC 5 singer take a dump in a bucket at one gig?

Iggy and the Stooges would have been gigging around Michigan at that time.

Iggy was some what bitter because they could have been stars but he nd the Stooges just wanted heroin.

He was somewhat pissed because he said this guy named Alice Cooper came to Detroit and essentially stole the Stooges act.

I think Carl Palmer of ELP started as the drummer for Arthur Brown.

Iggy was famous in the R&R crowd as his choice of entertainment consisted of blow jobs from 15 year old groupies. The Stooges were known for 3 chord licks and junk. I don't remember Rob shitting on stage.

What I found most interesting about the Motor City 5 was their politics. They were envious of what they saw as black street cred. Thus the White Panthers - "I'm just a white boy but I can be bad too". Big John (?) led the WP and pulled a 10 year gig for possessing 2 joints. A lot of us got political because of the perceived injustices to street drug users.

Bob Seger was just coming up then and he bought a farm near us on Kensington Road in Milford, Michigan. His girlfriend had a knack for handling kids who were having bad trips and we carted more than a couple kids up there for her to help. Bob was always a first class dude without the scandal crowd shadowing so many of the early Detroit area rock and rollers.

Flashback - chugging sneaky Petes (Bali Hai wine with Pabst Blue Ribbon beer) and hitting Thai sticks as we cruised Woodward Avenue in the city.

A lot of bands came out of Detroit. Grand Funk Railroad and Alice Cooper though I do not think he is from there. I think Sammy Hagar too. Cheap Trick were from I think Normal, IL.

The whole whites wanting street cred sort of came up again with Eminen from the Motor City.

We got a smart group here, eh? I didn't make that Eminem connection.

Uhhhh....

Used to roll up black hash gaggers, lie down between the stereo speakers and smoke while listening to 2112 over and over again, before putting on any one of a dozen other Rush albums.

You mean like that? Lol

I had gotten to know Buddy Richardson before he joined White Witch from Tampa. They became huge in the south and fronted once at a college for the one-hit-wonder "Lobo". Lobo actually brought out their tiny little Fender amps, plugged them in and started playing. Everyone thought it must be some sort of joke so they went along with the first song. Into the second song they realized that it was not a joke; this was their setup and their music, so people started throwing coins at them. They stopped without finishing, played their hit song, grabbed their little amps and got out of there. The auditorium began the chant "WHITE WITCH, WHITE WITCH, WHITE WITCH, WHITE WITCH" until they came back out and played for another two hours. Afterwards, me and a friend were invited into their tour bus and got blazed with the band. It was a magical evening. My personal favorite song by them was "It's so nice to be stoned", which is right here for your listening pleasure:

I smoked a joint with sharyl crow in 94, no real story there, a buddy of mine owned a record store and she did a signing, we were smoking, she hit it a few times, did her thing and bounced on
