Drying and curing - How dry is dry???

Ok, so, I've made a few other threads, they're littered about, so Ill keep this brief, more details are in the other threads, just search my user name.. Anyway.. I have some bud that I just harvested, well, about 2-3 weeks now. I kept it hung up for about 10 days, then I put it in a paper bag for a day and a half, then I put it in jars. I'm starting to think I rushed it a little. Its been about 2.5 weeks now, and Ive been burping the jars daily, sometimes twice, by taking the buds all the way out of the jars to rearrange them, and then leaving them out for a while, like 5-10 mins, then putting them back in the jars. Well, here is my dilemma. They don't seem to be getting any drier. They seem to have hit some sort of plateau in the jar. So, I think I need to take them out of the jars for a while, but then what? I put a little in a zip-lock baggie, just so I would have a little to smoke later, and when I woke up this morning, it was way more dry, and smellier, and tasted a little bit stronger (not much), but it was better.. So, I'm thinking maybe I should empty the jars into oven/turkey bags for a while, couple days maybe, then when they are a little more dry, THEN put them in the jars for a few weeks... Any opinions or suggestion would be much appreciated!! Thanks!

pack them loosely into reg ole brown paper bags for a day or two-than jar for day or 2 and keep repeating until how you like it.
if your drying temps and humidty were in check than 10 days should have been very suffecient.
you could also try to burp every other day for an hour-you may be burping too much and not letting the interior moisture from the bud matter fully work it's way out. if you let sit for more than 5-10 mins more like an hour and than rejar and leave closed for 2 days that may work as well. all trial and error. there are a gazillion ways to dry and cure a thousand different strains and 400,000 different moisture levels in the plant from how it was grown.

I just dont want to fuck this up.. Im afraid if the moisture is there for too long, it will mess up the bud, for example.. Not just mold, either, but, you know, that it may have just been wet for too long, so that would mess it up (I dont know if that is true, Im just speculating). Basically I am experimenting... LIke I said, the little bit I took out and put in a plastic bag seemed to dry better, so I took it all out and put it in plastic bags, which I am opening up every few hours. It seems like they got a little more moist from putting them in the bags, but I guess its cause it's being drawn out? Not sure.. Do you think I should switch from plastic to paper? The only difference I see is in paper, they have more room to breath and contact with air/air flow. With plastic, its similar to the jars. Although not airtight, I can still close the top, so it still gets a little more dry than it would sitting in an airtight glass container, but I still feel like I can control it better than by just leaving it out in the open. Any feedback is appreciated, like always!!

the paper bags will absorb/pull out alot of the moisture. according to most expets, the bud need to lose alomst 80% of its moisture for the THC to become fully psychoactive. after 10 days they cant be that moist, can they? just expirement-put some in paper bags, some in plastic, some in jars, some left out and than sample and see which you like better although you prob wont notice too mch of a diff-more diff in smoke. it def is not an exact science unless you are in a 100% temperature and humidity controlled lab.

My house is weird. Outside temps are around a constant 70, same with inside, between 68-72. The humidity in my house goes from 60-70%, depending on which room you are in.. My walls are concrete instead of lumber, so, my house has a different atmosphere inside than a regular home, I guess.. Its like a cold storage locker in here in the morning... I think the fact that it was so cold and humid in here, and the buds have been in jars only burped once a day, so, they've remained at a constant it seems.. I've tried the plastic bags to speed up the process, and Im opening them often to make sure there is no mold. I may move them into paper bags, but the 70% humidity has got me worried about keeping them out in the open...

Ok, final update. I hope. I've tried everything, from leaving them in jars, to taking them out, to putting them in plastic and paper bags (alternately), and all I managed to do was probably break off a million trichs during all that movement. Which brings me to another question, is that whole breaking of trichs thing for real? I mean, are you actually going to lose potency? Isn't there more THC IN the bud, not just on the outside? Yeah, so, I've got them back in jars, and they're moving along, just very slowly, and because I don't want to end up fucking up my bud, Im just gonna quit fucking with it. It smokes really good, smells good, but not very strong, and tastes good, but again, not very strong, and the high is grade A, very mellow, very much a creeper head buzz, and very enjoyable. So, Im happy with it, I just took a bud that I havent handled very much at all since harvest, and compared it to some of the buds in the jars, and the one that wasn't messed with looks like someone poured sugar on it, its so damn sparkley with crystals. The others are still crystally, just not as MUCh as the big one. So, on a side note, is there anything to that old story of breaking of trichs and affecting the quality of the weed? Seems like there are SOO many, that it wouldnt make TOO much of a differance.. Guess Ill find out when I compare the two buds..

I like to pull the complete plant, roots and all. Put the root ball in ice for 24 hours.
Then we remove all the leaves and place the stalk in a cardboard box. There it sits for 4 to 6 weeks depending........but I have seen people do it a lot of different ways.
I have heard the paper bag trick many times but never tried it.

Paper bags seems to have done the trick. I took them out of the jars and into bags for a day or two... about 36-48 hours, then back into the jars, and I noticed a difference right away. The jars were already not filling up to the top, like they were before, so I could tell I lost a little of the water weight. Also, after being back in the jar for a day or two, the smell is starting to come back, and the crystals are starting to be more prominent. Thing is now, though, is Im worried that all the transferring has affected the buds, breaking off the trichs and what-not... I don't know, maybe it's nothing that I should be too worried about... The shit is still stony as hell so far, and if its going to get better, then I'm stoked!

Trichs break off when they are nice and dry, its not a big deal. Affects the eye appeal more than the potency. If yours are not potent it may be due to premature harvest, how long did you flower them for? What strain was it? Possibly you are fairly tolerant to weed and just need to take a lil break from the Ganja for a couple days.

Sounds like you dried and cured them correctly, most cures take 3-4 weeks to get the fullest smell and flavor anyway. If it tastes good and smokes to a nice white ash that is ideal. Pot snobs ( I consider myself one) prefer tasty smokable weed more so than ass weed that gets you high. Most people I know would rather have a nice tasty bowl of kush sensimilla as opposed to a seed and stem laden bowl of mexican shwag. Your sounds like its tasty!

No, dont get me wrong, the shit is stoney as all hell, I just, you know, wouldnt mind if it got MORE stoney!!! Anyways, so, I moved it back into the jars from being in plastic bags for about 3-4 days, then paper bags for another 2-3. I definitely noticed a change. While I didn't lose almost ANY weight ( I know, amazing), I could tell that the buds didnt fill the jars up as much as they did when I first had them in there, and some of the buds were firming up, feeling more dry to the touch. So, now Im hoping they dont get wet again from being in jars. The fact that my house is so humid is really messing up this whole process. So, yeah, as long as the trichs breaking off isnt relaly that big a deal, Im not worried. As this stuff dries out more, though, the crystals are more apparent, so maybe they're not all broke off, just cant see them yet. So, now I just burp em once a day and wait, and hope they get that stinky STINKY dank smell... You know, the one nug stinking up your whole room kind of stink!!!
