DWC 5 gal cooler HELP!

Hello all,

Ok so I have had nothing but issues with dwc I don't know what I could possibly be doing wrong anymore so hopefully someone can help me out.

Here is my setup:
400w MH
Room temp 75F-78F
Light on 24 hours
Humidity at 40-60 %
Oscillating fan
5 Gal cooler
6 Inch net pot
Hydroton
2 Sufficient air pumps
2 Air stones
Water temp 65-71F
1/4 DNF A and b formula
1/4 Cal mag
5ML DNF hydro sparkle
5.5-6.5 PH
680EC

I don't know what I could be doing wrong the strain is kosher kush and she has been struggling since I put her in the dwc. The leaves are dropping and and curling down as you can see in the pic also the growth has been incredibly slow. Normally I can solve my issues just by searching threw this forum but nothing seems to help. Please anybody How do I get me plant back to being healthy and ERECT!?!?

Looks deficient plus I'd put an antibiotic in there like SM-90 to keep your roots healthy. Raise your nutes and see if she looks happier in a couple of days.

I went to the local hydro shop last week and the guy recommended grozyme? I put some in and it made everything all brown and slimy so I took that out quick. Is SM-90 the same sorta product?

Wait you said 680EC, I think you mean 680ppm which is just under 1.0 EC. In that case, you are running way too many nutes. I just moved to about 400ppm for this 2 1/2 week old seedling 16.jpg

5.5 to 6.5 is a huge ph swing too. Try to keep it around 5.7-5.9 if you want to but I always just went for 5.8.

Maybe you can help me out with the whole PPM/EC thing.
I bought a cheap TDS meter from amazon it reads in ppm? I did not calibrate it
I also bought a Nutradip meter from the local hydro store it reads in EC 0-9999? I calibrated this one.
I don't really understand why everyone says 1.0 EC does this mean 1000 on my EC meter?
If my ppm should be at 400 ppm what is that in my EC meter?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance.

Do you know why the PH would rise so much? I do put frozen water bottles in every once in a while...
How do you get your ph to stabilize without more nutes?

Ok i dont understand why no one has informed you, but if your ph is steadily rising then you're dealin with brown slime algae or cyanobacteria. It's the top sticky in the dwc forum "root slime cure aka breeding beneficial microbes".
To simplify a 300 page read you're gonna wanna brew some tea exactly how it says on page 1 then innoculate the roots, and keep any organics out. It's the ONLY reason i and so many others can still grow dwc.

Another route is to try a sterile rez and dump in h2o2 but i personally haven't found this method to work. Basically there are pathogens (bad microbes) everywhere in water and i bet one has been able to multiply and take hold of your system. At least it's a relatively easy fix!!

Everything is based on EC . ppm , tds are conversions from EC. different meter companies use different conversions.

Don't listen tot he poster about hydroton as being garbage. How far up is your water line on the netpot? For seedlings it should be halfway up the netpot or where the roots are touching the water. Once they get going you can let the water line drop to around 2 inches below the netpot(do this drop down gradually).

My water line is about an inch below the net pot? I just changed the rez and the water line is now about an inch over the net pot.

Well at first you should leave the water level nice and high to prevent the seedling from drying out, but once the plant starts to develop a nice root structure, you should let the water lower and have some of the roots not submerged. They'll intake air and will stay moist due to the humidity.

What do you consider a nice root structure? I mean the roots are coming threw a little bit here and there but nothing over half inch tho.

I don't run this hot in flower but this is a chart I think a lot of people would consider fine.


  1. Seedlings, Early Sprouts.........100 ppm to 250 ppm--------0.2 ec - 0.5 ec


    Early Vegging..........................300 ppm to 400 ppm--------0.6 ec - 0.8 ec


    Full Vegetation........................450 ppm to 700 ppm--------0.9 ec - 1.4 ec


    Early Blooming.........................750 ppm to 950 ppm--------1.5 ec - 1.9 ec



    Full Mature Blooms..................1000 ppm to 1600 ppm------2.0 ec - 3.2 ec

I grew DWC for a few years and I liked to have the water level 2" below the bottom of the net. I also liked to use dual manifold pumps per bucket. The more air allowed me to let my res get really low. All the popping bubbles helped. As far as pH goes. If your pH keeps trending up I would set it to like 5.5 and not allow it to drift over 5.9. I would also allow your plant(s) to rest some. There is really no need to run your lights non-stop. I feel that having a plant jump from 24 to 12 hours of light is a good way to stress your plant out. just my opinion. Also, I noticed on these boards that converting PPMs to EC cuts down on reply's asking about what ppm scale you're referring to
