I checked, maybe somebody has already posted this but I don't have an account with twitter and never will. I haven't been able to access the links to twitter that people post here. This article give Musk's explanation. He says it's temporary but I don't believe anything he says. Looks like a desperate move to pump up revenues through rationing.

Accounts that have been “verified” on the platform will be allowed to read 8,000 posts per day, tweeted Musk, who owns the site. Unverified accounts will be limited to 800 posts per day. On the most restrictive end, newly registered unverified accounts will be limited to only 400 posts per day. Users could be locked out of their accounts if they exceed their limits, The Associated Press reported.

what i got out of it was that some data collection companies were mining twitter without cutting muck in on the action, so this is his way to force them to give him his cut.

yeah, but,

Musk stopped paying Google for access to their servers. Their deadline was end of June. Twitter doesn't have the same sophistication in handling volume that Google has. Their code is in early stages of development Something tells me it's buggy and slow. So, maybe it's not just high demand from AI startups but also a loss in ability to handle high traffic.

What Musk said is true. AI startups are scraping data from Twitter and any place they can, including here. It's been going on for months now. So, NOW it's a cause of service interruptions? I simply offer that there are other and better explanations than Musk is providing. I think Musk caused his own mess by stepping over a dollar to save a dime. But maybe this once, Musk is on the level.

The only way muck is on the level is if the level is crooked...

this won’t load. What is the alleged real reason?
BREAKING: Multiple software engineering experts accuse Twitter owner Elon Musk of hiding the REAL reason why Twitter is crashing — and of rolling out a shameless lie in order to hide the truth.

Dozens of experts are now accusing Elon Musk and his Twitter of being under a self-inflicted “DDOS attack” because “Twitter is firing off 10 requests per second to itself to try to fetch content that never arrives because Elon Musk’s latest ‘genius’ innovation is to block users from being able to read content without being logged in.”

So, there you have it folks. Musk broke Twitter and is now trying to sell Twitter users a phony excuse that he’s trying to stop “data scraping.” Very Trumpian of him…

That’s likely why it would not load. I’m unlikely to be logged in as I don’t and won’t have an account.

He's such an effing idiot. I know practically nothing about the technical details of running his operation but I can connect the dots. He didn't pay his effing service provider, in this case, Google Cloud. THE DAY the contract deadline passed this came up.

Guess what he doesn't get when people don't access tweets (which happens really fast under Musk's policy, according to people who use twitter)? He loses ad revenue. People who have been sticking with twitter through its ups and downs are going to look for solutions -- FAST.

People whose business models depend on twitter are screwed. Offices that depend on twitter get shut down. People/influencers who are paid per view on their twitter accounts -- their viewers get shut down. To businesses, this is a crisis. When their business becomes disrupted, people get motivated to cut their reliance on twitter. Everybody except Musk must drop what they are doing to find a way to patch the holes in their businesses that Musk created. He did this without warning. His customers are going to hate him. This is going to drive traffic away from twitter and into new providers. No ad campaign from an alternative start up could possibly do what Musk's unforced error did do to motivate people to find alternatives to twitter. Those who are able to take on the new demand and can help people migrate to them are in for a huge increase in traffic. This is a not just a death spiral for twitter, it will be like they disappeared into a black hole.

What a fool. Worse still, he's lying to us as if we are bigger fools. I don't know if it's the first rule of good business practices but it's up there: Don't piss off your customers.

I first saw those messages on Friday. No explanation, just, "something is wrong, try again".

I'm ok with it, I don't need to go to twitter to get the details. Nor am I willing to spend any more time on the internet. Eff Musk.
Until the Starship launch I avoided the site on principle. However it was the place to keep tabs on developments, and the rocket fascinates me.

Looks like Skum is providing an assist for my going back on the wagon.

So much for the new CEO he hired, it's like trying to be Trump's lawyer, Elon's presence and influence are the problem with Twitter, he needs to disappear, ban himself and leave management alone. Even Trump could come up with a twitter clone FFS, how hard can it be?

The exCEO Jack Dorsey is starting a platform called Bluesky to compete, and Facebook is also releasing an app targeted at it. Elon paid 2 to 3X what it was worth and then crashed its value by trying to sweat his ego driven mistake out of the staff and by being an utter asshole.

Can one day go by without this fucknut saying something either profoundly stupid or profoundly offensive, or both? I sure doesn't seem like it.
How can this asshole think that being a parent grants you some kind of wisdom or insight for at least a few years? And that's if you're not a dumbass to begin with...It sure hasn't made muck any smarter.

there should be a voting ban on parents who think it’s a good idea to name a child X Æ A-12.

Did I just hear a rumble over the landscape?

Meta to launch Twitter competitor this week
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is set to launch a “text-based conversation app” expected to rival Twitter later this week.
A website for the app, which is called Threads, shows a countdown to Thursday morning and links to the new platform’s Apple App Store page.

“Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow,” the App Store page reads.

“Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things — or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world,” it continues.
Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, reportedly called the app “our response to Twitter” at a companywide meeting last month, according to The Verge.

“We’ve been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run, that they believe that they can trust and rely upon for distribution,” Cox said at the time, The Verge reported.

Twitter has undergone a chaotic eight months since billionaire Elon Musk acquired the social media company last fall.
Musk has replaced the platform’s traditional verification scheme with a paid subscription service, eliminated certain content moderation rules, temporarily suspended the accounts of several journalists and reinstated the accounts of previously banned individuals, including former President Trump.

Most recently, on Saturday, Musk implemented temporary limits on how many tweets users could view per day. While verified accounts were restricted to viewing 6,000 posts a day, unverified accounts were limited to 600 posts and new unverified accounts were further limited to 300 posts.
