Tesla is being swamped by competition and innovation, every automaker on the planet has bet the farm on EVs. The amount of battery R&D going on is staggering and there are breakthroughs everyday some are even starting to make it to production or improving existing production. There will be more change in the automotive business in the next 10 years than in the past 100 and it will spawn energy storage with mass production and markets.
I bought a new car this week and had looked at some Teslas but I just didn’t like them.
Too small and kept hitting my head every time I got in one.
I went with a Toyota Mirai instead and am very glad I did.
The Mirai is a hydrogen fuel cell luxury car.
My favorite part is Toyota gave me $15,000 in free fuel when I bought it.
Tesla can’t beat a deal like that.
Nobody can.

What is your fuel cost per mile? How close are you to a fueling point, and what’s your mileage interval between fills?
I’m quite curious. I wanted a Clarity for a time, but no infrastructure nearby (and no plans for any) made it impractical.

I work 1.5 miles from a hydrogen fueling station, so no problems there.
I just got the Mirai on Monday so I can’t completely answer your other two questions yet.
I can say that it gets well over 200 miles per fill up but I don’t have an exact number yet.
My mileage so far has varied between 35 to 55 miles per gallon, depending on the trip, and how I’m driving.
It gives me a score card after every drive and shows me the mileage stats.
She’s a 2017 model but is still getting excellent mileage.
I filled it up for the first time yesterday and the total was $91.81.
Which sounds high until you factor in the $15,000 of free fuel and realize that it’s literally nothing.

I love super crazy economy vehicles. I would preorder an Aptera if I thought the company had a good chance of surviving. In my desert location, the coupla hundred watts from the built-in solar would take care of most of my miles. And it has dork appeal!

An ebike gets ya the most miles per kWh and a 1 kW motor means ya don't need to pedal at all, next up in bang per kWh is an emotorcycle, a better choice if freeways are an issue.

Any rain there in the desert lately? I assume you are in the high desert.

Fuck an ebike; can’t take it on the freeway. The e-motorcycles don’t appeal to me because of short range and worse mileage than the Aptera! They’re also damned expensive and entirely lack the solar feature.

I’m not in the real high desert, but in the desert with a decent buzz on. 2300 feet.

I figure in a few years there will be a cheap subcompact EV that will meet your needs and gets good mileage, such a vehicle would be in demand, as I think home charging options will play into many purchasing decisions. 120V charging with an internal charger and regular fast charging would be a winner IMHO and that means a small efficient car, if ya want any daily commuting range at all.

I sure hope so. Aptera sets the standard with 10 miles/kWh and a 60 battery (range 600 miles) and solar recovery of a coupla dozen miles per nice day. It caresses my nerdogenous zones.

I do not want to give up even one of those three properties.

The one thing that I’d add to the package is the onboard hardware for being able to use it as domestic power backup so it could power a 2-kW inverter. Nerd boner!
