Exhaust Pipes Material

What is the silver material used in some peoples exhaust pipes? Is it vital to use this material and what is the reason that it is used? I know I have seen this using in kitchen exhaust pipes in the past so I guess it is the same thing. Here is a pic I found that shows one.

are you talking about the flex duct or the duct tape?? i doubt you mean the tape since thats easily recoginzeable... although i would assume the flex duct is easy to recognize also.. but its just standard flex duct you get at any home improvement/hardware store..

hi, yes I meant the silver tape. I have seen this before but wanted to know a bit more about it and what is? Is it fireproof or something and is this important to use for the exhaust pipe?

So to make an exhaust pipe like this then I would need ro buy flex duct and some duct tape!

Flex duct from by the dryers or in the ventilation aisle of home improvement store.... the tape is also duct work tape - you can use regular duct tape just fine... but the reflective tape is.. well... reflective.... self explanatory.. lol

all you do is go to your hardware store and get vent tube for dryer... you want the flex one not the hard stuff... and then go to the painter section cuz thats normally where all the tape is and find the stuff that is silver ... its aluminum foil tape.. they also have high temp aluminum foil tape but the flex tubing wont get that hot... if you cant find it just go to a worker and tell them that you need to get a flexible vent tube for your dryer and some alluminum tape so seal it cuz it forms to what you tape it to..... (i hate looking for something and feeling i cant ask for help cuz then they say whats it for or somthing like that then im stuck there thinking of a real use for it.. lol so i dont ask for help and therfor i lose out... lol)

Haha. When I last went to Lowes, the guy knew exactly what I was doing. Kind of stupid of me to come up with pots, light fixtures. CFLS. duct work. haha.

But just grabbing a few things is no worries. People go to those stores all day every day and get random things.

more4u2c, this is the newbie central and I don't seen anything wrong with making sure of getting the right materials, not everyone is as smart as you! If you can't offer helpful advice to newbies then your in the wrong forum.

ok thanks for the help everyone else and it has been really valuable to know what I need to ask for and buy. I think it's better to get the right materials and get the job done properly.

As for asking in shops, yeah I know what you mean. Today I went into an elecronics shop to buy a 12 volt adapter for my PC fans and it was a large shop so I thought it would be easier just to ask the guy where the right section is. After explaining I wanted a 12 volt adapter with a plug he then showed me a section with the wrong thing. I then explained I wanted adapters that plug into a wall socket. He then asked what it was for of course.

That's funny as hell. I went into Home depot and asked about 48" 2700k fluro tubes and the guy knew what I was using them for.

One thing that comes into play when buying things.. Always try to look nice. People can easily guess or have some idea of what your getting for what.
