Experiment: 5x5, 1000W HID, FFOF, Dyna-Gro, 40 1-gallon fabric pots

Hello everyone.
So, I had a lot of fun with my first indoor grow. I did end up with lots and lots of seed though from one plant. Now it's time for round 2. So, with all this seed I asked myself, what would happen if I grow 40 plants out, sex them, and then flower the remaining females as soon as the last male is culled? So, I'm hoping to end up with 25 or so females, but I'm going to assume 50/50 and expect 18-20. Additionally, I'm assuming these seeds are regular, and not feminized. It could possibly be that I just missed a hermie last go around, so that would leave me with all females and some hermies to watch out for, as far as I know. We shall see!

Strain: The Church x Deadhead OG x The Church x Deadhead OG . I will be picking out the best female and using her for clones. Eventually, I want experience with hydroponics and perpetual growing, so this is a great time to get a lot of experience with all of that goodness. Means I have to get another tent though. Watch out wallet!

If I end up with not as many females as I want I'll just let them veg a little longer till the tent is full, and perhaps transplant them out of their 1-gallon pots into 3 gallons. The pots have a full volume of 4 liters BTW, so they are true gallon pots.

I won't be updating this as often as my first journal. But if you have any specific questions that I haven't answered, all ya have to do is ask and I'll get back to you!

looks good so far. i still have thoughts of doing a sea of green like this... i figured you'd need to have access to a four sides though.

Thanks for stopping by. Nah. I've got a space next to the tent where i can take enough plants out to service the rest. I think you're thinking of a SCROG setup. That would be tricky anymore than say 4x4 or so....maybe even 3x3 is the most I would go if I couldn't access all sides.

So, I'm going to take this one as a good omen -- a four-leaved clover of sorts. Got a tri-leaved seedling out of the 40 I planted. I'm also starting to wonder if I just planted 40 female seeds. It is very possible the plant that had the most seeds went herm and I just didn't notice. The other two had seed, but, maybe 1-2 per gram, compared to 15+ per gram on the one plant. I'm hoping that's the case, cause I'll just go to flower in another 3 weeks and keep a close eye on any herms. and end up with 30-40 SOG colas.

I've also been racking my brain trying to come up with a quick and easy way to water these pots, maybe up to twice a day! I've got a few ideas, one of which is something I call a water flute. I glued a funnel to a a 45 degree PVC elbow, and attached that to a 5 foot PVC pipe, so the funnel is level, and I can "water from a distance". I just need to put a diffuser on the end so it doesn't all just flood out at once. For now, they are being literally bottle-fed.

If the water flute doesn't do it for me, I have a few other ideas up my sleeve to get them watered quick. One is finding some 8 inch buckets, putting each plant in that, and just filling the outer perimeter with water /ferts. It's fabric, it'll soak right through. Should work if it comes down to it. I want to avoid water everyyyyyyyy where, cause it leaks out the sides of the pots... I'll take a pic of the watering flute and upload it sometime soon...

Just a quick update. Moved everything to a new location (that was a chore, lol) and back up at it again, although still busy from the move.

So I recently lollipopped them all. I'm almost 100% the plants are all female. Lollipopped on the 30th. Going to start flowering on the 6th after they recover from the lolli.

I'm hoping for about 32 plants once I remove the runts and any herms. So, the reason I decided to lollipop them now, is because of the revelation that they're all females. I was expecting 16-20 females, not 40 :)

This was taken on the 30th.

Edit: Almost forgot, am feeding Dyna-Gro Pro-tekt at 1/4Tsp / gallon, and last night started with 1/8th / gallon of Dyna-Gro Bloom. Also, .75Tsp of Magnesium per gallon. pH'd to 6.3-6.5 with GH pH-down. 5 drops per gallon.

The plants reacted really well to their first feed. Here they are 3 days after from the above picture. Much darker and lush leaves. Flower time in 3 days! Edit: One female has already confirmed herself. Waiting on the others to follow. This strain takes a while to show. Happened that way with the first 3 I grew.

So, it's been a while. Looks like I have a nutrient deficiency. This strain is PICKY, and FINICKY as hell. The first time I grew this, I only had 3 plants, 2 of them turned out to be males. But they were always finicky. The one female grew out some great buds regardless though. Pretty sure I am underestimating how heavy a feeder this strain is. Both it's parents are reportedly heavy feeders (Church and Deadhead OG)

Plant pH is dialed in. I water in between 6.3-6.5. I've tested the soil, all signs point to normal for pH.
I employ, to the best of my knowledge, proper watering techniques. I am also consistent with when I water them. Temperature of water about 68 degrees.
I am using Dyna-Gro Bloom 3-12-6 at first 1/8th TSP / gallon, after a couple waterings, at 1/4TSP / gallon as of yesterday.
I also am using ProTekt 0-0-3 Sillica. I pH down with GH pH-Down
1Tsp/gallon of magnesium salts were administered a week ago with 1/8th of Dyna-Gro Bloom. Plants were foliage fed the same solution . They were showing slight signs before I started feeding. So, I think I need to crank it up to 1/2TSP /gallon, see where that gets me. Thoughts?

It's getting crazy in there. I cant fit all the plants in the shot, lol.

Here are some natural light pics of a few plants that seem to be really nutrient deficient. If it's lockout, it's because I'm not providing enough Phosphorous. (my hypothesis) because the plants have been fed so little. And for the first week they got distilled. So, there shouldn't be anything to flush out. What do you guys think?

I found this on my fertilizers website: Mo – Molybdenum: Structural part of enzymes that reduce nitrates to ammonia for amino acid development essential to protein formation; required by nitrogen fixing bacteria. Deficiency symptoms: pale leaves with rolled, cupped margins. Seeds may not form. Nitrogen deficiency may occur if plants are lacking Mo.



I think we have a winner!!! Doesn't matter, I was going to double the feed anyway. It would have worked itself out. I feel a lot better though, arriving at some kind of understanding of what's going on, instead of guessing.
