Alberta, Canada’s Texas;

Deputy PM Freeland responds to harassment incident in Alberta

That's not typical Alberta at all. It's a bit "newsy nitpicked" IMHO. For context, Grand Prairie is a bigger Northern city with a population of around 65000. Largest city South of them is where I live in Edmonton. We have around 1.1 M. Gets a bit dicier going South towards Calgary and then further South is the foothills and Rocky Mountains where my Hillbilly clan are from.

Hope this helped. ;)

I'm not giving you a hard time about it. I just thought I'd mention it so that other people watching had a bit of context to what Alberta is typically like in my experience. I've noticed since covid hit that CTV has been trolling us big time with a number of dumb ass news stories. I'm guessing this has a bit to do with it.

In the end they need to draw viewers and advertisers. There's nothing that draws them like a good troll of a pretty Conservative province. The actual people here are super nice no matter where you go though. It's all noise IMO.

my next door neighbor is nice to me, but he has trump stickers on his truck...and i'm pretty sure if we met at a riot, we wouldn't be nice to each other. nice in a calm situation with no provocation is one thing, how nice would they be if they knew what you thought of their politics, their dear leader? that you weren't against "the gays"...that you were in favor of letting women make their own decisions about their health, reproductive or otherwise? that you were in favor of letting parents and their children decide what was best for them, educationally, and physically?
i know old ladies here that go to church, help out at the food bank, spend their days gardening...but if they knew you were pro choice, or anti trump, they would make you a whole pan of rat poison cookies...

The only time I see anything re: Politics from any neighbor here is when there's an actual election. Every couple to 4 years give or take. Some neighbors will have signs on their lawn for a specific person in a specific party, but the signs only go up if someone from that particular party gets permission from the home owner to put it there. Otherwise they litter the public property along major roads with signs. Which is a fucking annoying eyesore IMO. It's pretty rare to see anybody tarnishing their own personal property with political crap like stickers, flags, and signs around these parts. I personally do not allow any Political messaging on my property and if they phone or come to the house to chat when there's an election, I just ask them for the pamphlet and tell 'em that I'll read up on what they're offering on the webpage. But my family doesn't really affiliate with a party per say. I've voted for all 3 major parties multiple times for various reasons. It's never about the party. To each their own I guess.

a name is just a name...but right now the name "republican" is synonymous with "fascist" and "christian nationalist" and "authoritarian"...i would vote for a republican, if the entire party quit trying to work against the country and started trying to make progress, and that republican had good ideas and the resolve to get those ideas acted upon...but i just don't see that happening in the near future...or even the distant future, sadly. i think the republican party will slip into irrelevance, and be replaced by a party that is composed of actual conservatives and independent moderates. the maga republicans will become like the small radical parties of Europe, they won't go away, but they're never going to get into power again, either...

Italy just elected a party that takes its policies from the Trump handbook of fuckery. The world is becoming a very scary place for everyone. It’s like watching an end of times movie :(.
i prefer to think of it as watching a "heroes prevail and kick the asses of oppressive fuck face authoritarians" movie...this is just the set up part, have to give the heroes some asses to kick in the second half...now we just have to find a few heroes...that shouldn't be too hard, right?

I used to think of myself as having some conservative values. Now I cannot vote for a conservative. When the fabric of the republic was and is getting pulled apart, wanna know what I didn’t see?

A coalition of concerned conservatives identifying, publishing and voting against the authoritarian takeover.

They’ve lost my support for a combination of cowardice and complicity.

A South Dakota House candidate who lost his race appeared in court this Tuesday on a charge of second-degree rape, KOTA reports.

Bud Marty May, 37, faces 50 years in prison over the Class 1 felony charge. According to the victim, May forced himself on her in a bathroom stall at a bar, telling her, “I am 6′8, white, it is all consensual.”

May then fled the scene but was later detained by police. The Republican candidate initially denied involvement, but then claimed, "it was simply a hug."

IN OTHER NEWS: Trump barred attendees of his presidential announcement from leaving Mar-a-Lago until he was done: report

As KOTA points out, May ran for one of the two South Dakota House seats in District 27, which includes Bennett, Jackson, Oglala Lakota, and Pennington counties.

The seats were won by Peri Pourier (D) with 29% of the vote, and his mother Elizabeth May (R) with 26.7% of the vote.

There have been "never Trump" Republicans present and active throughout this entire authoritarian nightmare. Even the Kochs took a stand against him, though more for economic reasons than social ones.

I just posted elsewhere about party leadership censuring the few who would not approve insurrection.
That's true. Republican leadership have been feckless and cowardly when it came to facing Trump's base. I wasn't talking about Congress but Republicans in general. There has been Republican opposition to Trump but they were political outsiders in GOP. Even Cheney. She was othered as soon as she broke with Trump's MAGA.

The Lincoln Project has been a voice in the wilderness. However I question their popularity, seeing how very many voted for undiluted Repugs this last go’round.
