Fascism and the Republican Party

“Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. One may protest against evil; it can be exposed and, if need be, prevented by use of force. Evil always carries within itself the germ of its own subversion in that it leaves behind in human beings at least a sense of unease.”

“Against stupidity we are defenseless. Neither protests nor the use of force accomplish anything here; reasons fall on deaf ears; facts that contradict one’s prejudgment simply need not be believed — in such moments the stupid person even becomes critical — and when facts are irrefutable they are just pushed aside as inconsequential, as incidental. In all this the stupid person, in contrast to the malicious one, is utterly self-satisfied and, being easily irritated, becomes dangerous by going on the attack.”

“There are human beings who are of remarkably agile intellect yet stupid, and others who are intellectually quite dull yet anything but stupid.”

“The impression one gains is not so much that stupidity is a congenital defect, but that, under certain circumstances, people are made stupid or that they allow this to happen to them. We note further that people who have isolated themselves from others or who live in solitude manifest this defect less frequently than individuals or groups of people inclined or condemned to sociability. And so it would seem that stupidity is perhaps less a psychological than a sociological problem.”

“The fact that the stupid person is often stubborn must not blind us to the fact that he is not independent. In conversation with him, one virtually feels that one is dealing not at all with a person, but with slogans, catchwords and the like that have taken possession of him. He is under a spell, blinded, misused, and abused in his very being. Having thus become a mindless tool, the stupid person will also be capable of any evil and at the same time incapable of seeing that it is evil.”

“He is under a spell, blinded, misused, and abused in his very being. Having thus become a mindless tool, the stupid person will also be capable of any evil and at the same time incapable of seeing that it is evil. This is where the danger of diabolical misuse lurks, for it is this that can once and for all destroy human beings.

“Upon closer observation, it becomes apparent that every strong upsurge of power in the public sphere, be it of a political or of a religious nature, infects a large part of humankind with stupidity.”

“Yet at this very point it becomes quite clear that only an act of liberation, not instruction, can overcome stupidity. Here we must come to terms with the fact that in most cases a genuine internal liberation becomes possible only when external liberation has preceded it. Until then we must abandon all attempts to convince the stupid person.”
Many years ago I started calling these people Fascists and I was met with doubt and derision right here in this very forum. Nobody doubts it anymore.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer called his enemies stupid but paid with his life. Underestimating today's neoFascist threat is equally dangerous and we cannot afford to make the same mistake.

There are plenty of stupid followers of the Fascist Republicans but they're still dangerous. Their leadership, however, is anything but.

This is going to get worse before it gets better.

Many years ago, you were calling our society fascist, long before Trump and the GOP showed us what US fascism looked like. Your use of the term was broad brush that included bits and pieces of fascism that are common with many other forms of government. What you said wasn't even true. Your use of the term was akin to a monkey at the zoo throwing poo at onlookers. So cool your jets, tty. It deserved to be mocked.

"Our country is now being run as a de facto corporate fascist society, complete with control of the media- none of the large news outlets report anything of real importance,"

Well what do you know? I'm still right.
Your declarative statement contains no argument against what I said.

At this time and at the time you wrote your earlier broad brush statement, the US was not and never has been a fascist state. What I see you doing making up your own definitions about what fascism is because it's a loaded term and draws attention. The US is not some holy unstained beacon of all things good about democracy, just look to Mexico to see how harmful our form of capitalism is. But we are in fact a capitalist democratic republic. Our votes still matter and what Democrats are doing to change this country draws the ire of the powerful wealthy who prefer the status quo of the past

Republican Trumpism is the fascism that this thread is about.

Democrats are nothing like that.

So, make your case. Tell me why I'm wrong. Try to convince us that the US is already a fascist state. Post links to back up what you say.

Rather than being seen as passive victims to an irresistible force, psychiatrist Robert Lifton argues that there is “voluntary self-surrender” in one’s entrance into a cult. Further, the decision to give up control as part of the cult process may actually be part of the reason why people join. Research and experience tell us that those who are “cult vulnerable” may have a sense of confusion or separation from society or seek the same sort of highly controlled environment that was part of their childhood. It has also been suggested that those who are at risk for cult membership feel an enormous lack of control in the face of uncertainty (i.e., economic, occupational, academic, social, familial) and will gravitate more towards a cult as their distress increases. I would argue that many of these factors are at play when we see the ongoing support of Trumpism and MAGA “theology.”

Psychologist Leon Festinger described the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance in which there is a disconnect between one’s feelings, beliefs, and convictions and their observable actions. This dissonance is distressing and, in order to relieve the anxiety, people may become more invested in the cult or belief system that goes against who they are individually. As such, cult members become more “dug-in” and will cling to thoughts and beliefs that contradict available evidence. In other words, they are no longer able to find a middle ground or compromise.

Of course, Trump isn't alone in pulling this bullshit out of his ass, he has lots of help in keeping his cult brainwashed with bullshit. The republicans and their propaganda wing foxnews have been all Hunter all the time and other rightwing propaganda outlets echo this. So, does Russian propaganda and they sometimes work together to reenforce one another. This keeps the bullshit alive and their poll numbers high, they create an alternate reality and safe space for their suckers. Their contempt for their viewers is obvious, they lie to them all the time and abuse them for their own nefarious purposes, just like Trump.

This network OAN and newsmax are the only outlets carrying Hunter Biden shit and they spin the headlines to death along with the content.

So it's okay that the rest of the mainstream media is happy colluding with the Bidens?

Because that's not journalism. It's propaganda and partisanship. Americans have been told what to think by the major news outlets for so long they've forgotten that there was ever any other way it's effective until the shit being swept under the rug gets so out of control that the system breaks. I don't know where we are in the cycle other than to say American media has left journalism in the rear view mirror for so long that I suspect we are closer to the end than the beginning.

There is no evidence in the Biden matter and witnesses have directly contradicted the republicans running the clown show, only a fool would believe it. The professional journalists are not fools, only the propaganda networks are carrying it for profit because fools and useful idiots want to hear it. The "mainstream" media is consistent with reliable international media and reporting, these people aren't fools, but some of the public are.

Mexico recovers body of Honduran migrant in Rio Grande; another body found near floating barrier

To Texas fascists, illegally attempting to cross the border is a capital offense.
The only reason the immigrant died was because he chose to try and cross the border illegally. If he had not tried to cross illegally he would not have passed away. It is sad and very unfortunate but you can not blame the measures that are in place to stop illegal crossing. That is like blaming the gun when some deranged person kills others. Your argument makes no sense.

Who else puts razor wire along the middle of a river or blocks access to the shore with it? Any other countries, do it? Or is such an act itself illegal, against federal law? Perhaps against international law? The numbers of migrants have dropped off a lot over the past year and America is desperate for these kinds of workers with employee shortages hampering economic growth and falling birth rates.

If I were to set up fatal deterrents to try to prevent someone from trespassing on my property, and someone died, do you really believe that the courts would accept the reasoning that you present? What if someone is walking across the road illegally and I speed up to hit them with my car and they die, think the excuse of "if they weren't walking illegally they wouldn't have died" would be a successful in not having any charges brought against me?

Not to mention it is breaking long established treaties with Mexico by the sounds of it.
