Fat Salads Grow Box

Ok ...I visit this site like 5 times a day just to get a little more knowledge. I decided to write about my grow box set up and say THANK YOU, to all of you. I read where one person said that they liked to sit back, read and listen instead if ask questions and such and that is correct. READING IS FUNDAMENTAL. Most of what you need to know is here for the taking. So here is what I got.

Grow room
4x4x5 Plywood box
White painted walls later covered with Mylar
600 HPS vented hood
600 CFM Can fan
Hydrofarm CO2 injection system
Hydrofarm 150 watt CF for starters

I took a trip to Amsterdam for the Cup and got my beans. “The fellas” at Paradise seeds were very helpful with getting them back.

Beans
Greenhouse-White Widow
Paradise-Sensi Star
Paradise-Bella Donna
Magnus-Warlock
Monkey Butt-hey my homeboy said it was some fire bag weed so I planted it.

Nutes
Fox Farm Everything - Honestly I just like their labels.
Tiger bloom
Open Sesame
Grow big
Bloom Big
Fox farm Ocean Forest
Fox Farm Light Warrior
I am a dirt bagger I travel a lot and when I am away it is easy to tell my “friend” how to water opposed to trying to explain res. temps, aeration, Ph up and down. Besides I like to natural aspect of it. Don’t get me wrong I have 2 Mega Gardens and a homemade Aeroponics cloner with fogger I will be busting out next fall.

I started on Jan 31. I let my ladies go under the CF for about a month. I know way to long but my 600 HPS digital Ballast was back ordered from our friends on the east coast. Besides my box was not ready. The first batch of beans I put in water for 24 hours and planted in soil under a humidity dome and heater.
I have planted 3 out of the 5 Greenhouse WW and none have sprouted. I will talk to Arjan about that at this year’s cup. I think I got a bad batch.
From the original batch I put down 8.... I got 3 females … I know.. I know I was f***king up.

The problems
I brought some BS soil from my local Hydro store and it was way to hot (TDS).
I brought Fox farm Ocean Forest and mixed it with Light Warrior and this also has enough go go juice in it to last a plant for 2-3 weeks.
I got the “claw” Nute lock up.
I flushed my pots and the run off was like Coca-Cola. The TDS was off the charts and the PH was 10.

The Fixes
I brought a ph and tds tester and became a mad scientist.
After I flushed I waited and watered with no nutes for 2 weeks my plants came back.
I planted 8 more 7 are females. Yeah baby.

I will post pictures Sunday.

Hey everybody I added a can fan with filter to my grow box set up today. I wasn’t to keen on hanging that thing from the ceiling like I seeing others doing so I made this stand thing for only10 bucks…

  • 2 foot piece of PVC
  • 2 cheap Toilet flange things; and it works perfect.
I transplanted my girls into 5 gallon pots today. I added my 150 watt CF to my box because the “monkey butt” was out growing the light. I will be adding some T5’s later this week and getting rid off the ‘quick rig’ I did. Take a look and tell me what you think.

PS.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get those white widow beans to sprout. I have 2 left and might consider giving a unique approach a whirl….

Thanx.

how's the heat in there? have you used the HPS in there yet?

The heat is fine. It is around 85 during the day and 60 at night. I use the can fan all day now and the temps are .... 65 and 50. I keep my home cold as f**K. so i grow in the basement so it is like 50 degrees down there. i am pulling 50 degree air into the grow chamber all day. the light is exhausting 92 degree air. i use one of those temp thingy with a laser on it.

Those temps seem pretty low to me, but I don't know much about Sensi Star. I know that my Satori and Chrystal didn't like it when the temps got down below 60 at all. You may want to turn your can fan off for the last 30 minutes of lights on time to conserve some of that heat, or just get a space heater?

When you say they dont like it what do they do? slow growth? what happens. I have put the can fan on a timer regimen and it stays about 70 degrees in the box. When it get up in the 80's they stink. it is easier for me to control the odour when the temps are lower. I will stick to the indica's for that reason in addition I dont have the height.

Yeah the cold temps can retard growth pretty significantly. They essentially go dormant below 60 degrees from what I've heard. If you keep it in the 70's you should be fine. Even mid to high 60's during lights out should be just fine as well.

i rarely achieve it but i shoot for 75 F (23.8 C) during lights on and 65 F (18.3 C) during lights off. And i try to keep my res around 65-68 F.

If you are adding CO2, you can increase your temps to 80-85 F.

I did not know that. I will make it hotter in there I quess:-?. Hmm lemme see, tell me what you think about this. At pot level... haha I said pot, the temp is 63 degrees(fan blowing on thermometer) at the plant top level the temp is at 76. I'ma roll with that.

Sound pretty good to me. If you could you may want to point your fan at the tops of the plants, sort of in between the lamp and tops. That's what I do and it allows me to get the light very close. I also have the hood vented, so with those two things my tops are actually able to touch the glass without burning (although only one is touching).
