Feedback on the "wives tale" of thumbtacks/nails in stalk

I know this been gone over many times here but I need some reliable info from someone who has done this or has seen it done?? Does this really do anything???
I guess it's supposed to emulate the plant getting strained and gives her the impression that she is dyieng therfore she starts to produce more resin as to
save herslef In one way or another.
