few questions

Hi im new to this and am trying to design a steal grow box. My grow area is going to be about 3.5 x 2 x 3.5 ft. I am going to be building a carbon filter and was wondering if this fan would work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-DELTA-120-mm-x-38mm-CASE-FAN-130-cfm-CPU-OC-SERVER_W0QQitemZ120431282846QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item1c0a438a9e&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A16|66%3A2|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A50

I was also wondering would the carbon filter work best if it were inside the grow box sucking the air threw the filter or outside the box pushing the air threw the filter?

I plan on starting out with norther lights and bubblelicious from nirvana, maybe 2 or 3 plants. So my question is how well do the homemade filters work and how much smell can i expect?

thanks

That fan is not good enough. Not even without attaching a filter to it (unless you use two , one intake and one exhaust. A filter will all but stop the air from THAT fan. What and how many lights are you using?

im going to be using cfl lights, i think im going to be using at least 3 per plant. i have the marijuana buds for less book and thats what im going to be using to help me. do you know of another kind of fan that would work? i dont want it to make a ton of noise either or cost a ton of money

thanks

Search for a 4 In. INLINE fan. Or a 4 in centrifugal fan if you want to use it in combo with a filter. And although CFL bulbs themselves dont get very hot, the ballasts do and it wont take very many to warm that small box up. So you really need a good fan or 2.

hi i'm working with a dresser which is 4ft by 31in by 17 1/2 in with a 250 watt Hps and electronic ballast. you guys mentioned 4in inline fans. first off, would that be best for intake and exhaust and also any reccomendations on where to get an inexpensive one that suits my needs.

Okay so the Vortex 4 inch 172 CFM High Power Inline Fan looks amazing but its way out of my price range is there a cheaper alternative that will still do the job for my case?

for the carbon filter you want air being pushed through not sucked through, for making one get a cone air filter from a car store put carbon pellets from a pet store in it then just some netting or cheesecloth to keep the carbon from falling out...thats not my idea i just found it on a thread

NO IT wont. Not with the filter. Not even close. I'm sorry, but thats what I've been trying to tell you. That fan will work to provide you with fresh air ONLY. I have one of those, but mine is a 6 inch. It barely does anything. That one you have is only 80 CFM's (thats Cubic Feet per Minute) That would be reduced to single digit CFM's with a filter attached. TOO weak. I know, I know you dont want to spend a lot of money. I hear you 100%. I'm the same way. But there is a certain bare minimum that you need. That HTG site is a good one. Look at the fan and filter combos they have. Yes they are expensive. But you can see what kind of fan to use with what kind of filter. You CAN make a perfectly good DIY filter very easily. But it'll only work with a good fan that moves a good amount of air. I would say you need AT LEAST 200 CFM's.
My fan cost me over a hundred bucks. I didn't want to spend that kind of coin, but i needed to move that kind of air so....i had to. I'm on my 4 th grow with it, so it only cost me 25 bucks per grow so far. Grows that easliy netted me several hundred dollars worth of buds. So it was WELL WORTH the investment. So quit F-ing around and get yourself a REAL fan. Or you will wish that you had. CFM"S man you need more CFM's.
You are going to want to put your lights in that box with your ventilation system set up well in advance of putting your plants in there. To test the temps and the ventilation. The sooner you get your lights set up in there the sooner you will be able to determine what the minimum fan requirements will be. Then you will see what I'm talkin about, and you'll know what you'll need.
LONG PAUSE
Ok i've been looking around online. I cant find a good 4 inch fan that will work WITH a filter for under a hundo. Thats why i have a 6in. there're about the same price so I went with the bigger one. You can get multiple cheesy fans and skip the filter, or get one good powerful fan and be done with it.
