I have looked into it heavily and seen several led grows, including the high watt ones, and led never gets quite to where it would be equivelent. As far as cheapness, it has been stated several time watt for watt, well 600w's is 600w's, weather its hps or led, 60w's of power costs the same. So no real money savings there. Then there's the heat, led's produce almost none, but neither does a well constructed hid room. If your running air cooled lights, with mylar covers and have the room wrapped in mylar, as well as a controlled temp on the room, you wont have a heat signature either. and I know you'll say you have to pay for all of that extra equipment, but its still is less than an led. then there's the quality. I have never seen any pics of led buds that were even close to comparable with an equivilent hid, and thats all around. Smaller buds, they usually get frosty, but it never looks like as dense of coverage, and the mass is never there. I have yet to see an led make a monster bud that you see hid's make all the time. Not even LED Girls 1700w led setup. And her's were the best I've seen. There is no real reason at the moment to own an led unless it is to support the cause and give them the funding needed to research and make them better. The one exception might be the small, poorly constructed cabinets that cant be built with proper ventilation and lining where just throwing an hps in would make temps unmanageable, but even in that situation, I have seen people do better with cfl's than led. Pretty much just saying the technology is a work in progress and can do nothing but get better with time. But on the space-age front, PLS lights seem to have a lot more promise in the near future.
