If Belize is anything like it was 20+ years ago, you'll be offered "smoke" multiple times within minutes of clearing Customs - especially if you are young like I was back then.

I stayed my first night in Belize City before flying out to Ambergris Caye for a dive trip. I left the hotel for a walkabout and was approached by a guy right away. He let me sample some of what he had, I gave him $20 which he handed off to a kid on a bicycle and off he rode. It took forever for the kid to come back – enough time to smoke another spliff and chill for a while. I started to get a little paranoid (being alone in foreign country and the effects of the joint) but the kid finally rode up and handed off a softball-sized aluminum foil ball tightly packed with some of the finest ganja I have ever inhaled. It had to have been WAY over an ounce for US$20! It was too much to smoke in 10 days and I ended up leaving the rest behind for the staff of this little hotel I stayed at on Ambergris.

My wife and I went back to Belize a few years ago on a cruise and it has gotten much more built up and commercial. We never left the shopping/dock area that was some distance from the hotel I stayed at many years ago.

I took a cruise to a few islands, last summer, belize being one of them. A few friends and I saw some locals beyond the tourist gates trying to get people to sign up for non-govt approved tour guides and other activities. It was cheaper than the authorized tour guides so we took a chance, and he brought us to his van which was pretty sketchy. We were pretty scared the whole time- being in a foreign country and driving what seemed like 2 hrs to our destination along crappy roads and away from civillization. But he seemed cool and while weeds illegal there, I asked him where we could get some and he took us to a chicken farm where we got about 7g's for 20 bucks. It was mids, but still pretty cheap. I dont recommend buying from random people on the streets unless theyre you get to know them somehow b/c ive heard of locals tricking tourists and working with the police so that they can blackmail you for thousands of dollars.
