Finish in the dark?

Oh Canada!

My plants are approaching harvest. I've never let them finish with seventy two hours darkness. I've read the science isn't clear but i'm just looking for personal opinions.

honestly if i remember correctly people said that bruce bugbee said that terpenes are created during the day not night so if this is true giving your plants a dark period before harvest is nonsense lol also your grow is looking gorgeous bro! what light and genetics are you using? also your in soil? coco? I'm curious cuz your buds look nice :D

Spiderfarmer SP 4000
Niagra seed bank 5 godfather OG and 1 purple punch. I have a review on Google Ted Hoyle for Niagra seed bank
Pro mix MYCORRHIZA high porosity
I've been growing since legalization in

5'×5' tent⁸
Humidifier, dehumidifier, fans in and out heater and some way of controlling them a must

Also Happy Hydroponic veg/bloom
The bloom is known as "the stuff"
Happy Hydroponics is a shop been open over 30 years, they know their stuff

I know a grower that swears by 3 days of darkness before a chop, there is some theory that it causes a stress response in the plant to produce more terpenes, resin etc. Makes sense that it would stress the plant into doing something at least, but that being fact is far from studied.

I mean, if your giving them 3 days of darkness after they are already ready to harvest, what's the harm? Give it a try?

I think im going to harvest 3 and let 3 sit for 3 days and see for myself

That's a great idea to provide a direct A/B comparison; a little science goes a long way to dispel some of the crazy theories that are only found in the cannabis community.

Suppose for the sake of argument, that 72 hours of dark did have some positive effect on trich production; say a miraculous 25% increase in trichs compared to a control over those 3 days.

Assuming a ballpark 70 day flowering cycle, 3 days of 25% increase in trich production would amount to a whopping 1% overall increase.

The logic behind the theory is bonkers and ignores basic plant science.

Doesn't hurt to experiment, but personally I wouldn't waste my time on this myself. Flowering is caused by hormones that build up as the length of darkness increases, and once flowering starts reducing darkness even more won't speed up the process, and could potentially limit your yield and potency.

This is why IMO you don't want to stress a plant, you want it healthy and thriving up until harvest, depriving it of light, water, nutes etc would negatively affect the end result. You see many people posting about flushing and stopping feeding a week or 2 before harvest, and other knowledgeable experienced growers pointing out the bro science involved in this

You are only in flower a month and now you want to put them in darkness?
I’m not able to tell by those pics but I bet you would be better served leaving three in flower for three more weeks
No dark cycle will produce the results three more weeks will

No sorry I did correct me, it's 64 days take a look in the chat.

Terpenes volatilize in light, there have been a few studies that show that your highest terpene levels are at lights on, but the differences, while measurable, are minor. A dark period does not increase THC content. So I’d put it in the mostly “bro science” category.

shurly that comes under stressing your plants before harvest, which will increase thc production. theres a few things that are ment to stress your plants before harvest, hash makers inj some parts of the world pin spikes in the base of the stem to stress them out.
i can see how someone would think that the extended dark hours would produce more thc, as its mainly produced at night time with darkness.
but if hash makers have tried and tested this method and still use it, would that be a better method of stressing the plant out rather then all the darkness.
