im not sure why mirrors would creat hot spots bc it's an even surface, foil yes bc it's will naturally become curved and may focus light. mirrors will distribute the light evenly once it reflects. for example, if you shine a flash light at a mirror, the reflection will be a circle too, maybe a little bigger, which actually means it disperses the light just a bit more.
often ppl talk about a mirror "absorbing" light, but everyone knows it's gotta reflect more than it absorbs. it's not necessary but if you have a few small panels may as well put them beneath the plant so that the light will reflect upwards and hit the bottom leaves.
