First Grow: DR40 Grow Tent, 150 Watt HPS, Hempy Bucket, White Widow

Now that this tent is open (still waiting for the other to finish up, WW and DQs), I potted eight Odyssey clones in 2-liter hempys. I'll go ahead and let them grow a bit before I start a journal, that way it'll already have tons of pics and information, and all that good stuff we like to chat about. It'll be the exact same conditions as the grows above, except I've added hygrozyme to my nutrient regimen and also lined the hempys with weed cloth.

You might even get that in total with the other two plants you have going included. Why don't you upgrade your light and get a 250 watt cool tube. Then heat will be less of an issue and you could just use a metal halide for veg and switch an hps in there for flowering in the same unit.

That's my plan after I finish this grow in 7 weeks

What is hygrozyme by the way?
 
A 250 in that tight of a space, with a cool tube or not, would be too much. I'm already at pretty much 10,000 lumens a square foot. Switching to a 250 in this tent would be a really, really bad idea. I'd lose WAY TOO MUCH headroom having to keep the plants farther away from the light (even with the tube). Besides, that would be light over-kill and be a general waste of electricity and light. Plants can't use more than 10,000 lumens of brightness. So adding more light won't do anything. It's about spectrum at this point, not brightness or intensity.

I'll get three zips with these other plants, but my goal is to get three zips per tent, not both. I want to be working at, AT LEAST 0.5 grams per watt efficiency, which I think is a respectable number to aim for for the homegrower.
 
oh yeah, hygrozyme is an enzyme that basically kills all the bacteria in the grow medium and helps break down the nutrients so the plant can absorb it easier. I don't really know the specifics of it, but the local hydro shop recommended I give it a try... since they've never steered me wrong, I figured I'd give it a try.

Can you elaborate on lighting and how much a plant needs? Asking as I too have a 150w HPS, in a cab, the usable space inside is about 33x29x14 inches. I almost bought the 250watt, but figured it would do nothing but waste space and build up more heat in my small cab.

I've also got two to three 23 watt CFLs running(2700K), which I added just to try and get in the small spaces for the side, or places where the HPS might not penetrate to due to foilage.

the 150watter puts out 16K lumens, which is well over the 10K you'd want. So are the CFLs I have added doing anything other than generating heat? Woudl I be better off putting in a 6500K CFL if I am going to use it?

The 10K lumens is per square foot... So since I have less than a foot and a half, and 16,000 lumens, it works out to a bit over 9100 lumens inside my tent. So to figure out lumens you need to figure out the square footage of your grow space (in this case 33" by 29"). That is a huge difference from the size that I am running, so in your specific case the 250 watt would have been a good idea. Again, best number to shoot for is 10,000 lumens per square foot.

As per your sidelights... Think about it this way... A 23 watt CFL puts out about 1600 lumens. So even if you were to have those lights a centimeter away from the plant itself, it would get at maximum 1600 lumens, still less than 20 percent of what it would need for flower. So to decide whether or not those lights are actually doing anything, you would have to figure out how much light those areas are getting from the fallout of the 150 watt hps. I'm sure the CFLs are helping, but considering their super-low intensity, I doubt they are helping that much. It might be better to get a single, bigger and brighter bulb in there... Like a 40 watt CFL (closer to 3000 lumens). So if it came down to switching to a single larger bulb, vs running smaller lights, I'd always go with the bigger and brighter bulb. Light intensity is the most important thing for flower.

Your grow space is significantly larger than mine, so I'd go ahead and leave the CFLs in there for now since the 150 watt HPS isn't going to give you enough lumens (or rather, the "ideal" amount of light... it'll work fine). Remember, however, lumens don't add. So five bulbs at a 100 lumens does not equal the output of one single 500 lumen bulb. More bulbs just spread the light further. This is why I would go with a single bright bulb, over many less bright bulbs. So I'd get rid of those 2-3 CFLS (23 watters), and get like a single 40-55 watt CFL in there.

As for color spectrum, that does add... I leave a CFL (6500 Kelvin) in the tent during the stretch phase of flower, not for the extra lumens but for the extra blue light. I'm actually thinking about leaving it in there the whole time this next grow so see if the bluer light will give me denser buds. I figure if I add 20 percent 6500k light, it should be a good place to start. So since I have 16,000 Lumens from the HPS, I'll grab a CFL that puts out around 3000 lumens (I think a 40 watter would be good enough).
 
PS: Just checked out your grow box... You are basically working with twice the amount of square footage that I am, so maybe the 250 would have been a good idea. That being the case, instead of running all those little cfl bulbs, when they go out, I'd think about grabbing a single 105 watt CFL for like $20, throwing it in a clamp light holder from home depot ($15) and mounting it sideways in the cab. It'll work better than all those little lights, and when you go into flower, you could leave it in there and run it alongside the HPS. A 105 watt CFL is about 7100 lumens... So that would supplement that HPS quite nicely.

As for color... I'd grab a 5000-65000k bulb. It'll keep the plant from stretching during flower as well, which will help a lot considering the space you are working with.

I keep forgetting that your using the dr40. I was thinking you had the same as me, the dr60. Your right a 250 would be overkill in that tent.

So do you use both tents for flowering or are you doing the perpetual grow thing and use one for vegging and one for flowering?
 
I run them both at the same time. Full grows in each. One had the LA Con, the other has the WW and the DQs (almost done). Now that the one with the LA Con is empty, I went ahead and filled it with eight new babies. Once the other tent it empty, I'll wait till after the new year and go ahead and fill it back up with some clones. Start it a few weeks ahead of the other tent, get some really nice, slow growing OGs in there, and try to time a really big harvest at the end.
 
I just pulled them both this weekend! They were actually ready on the early side. The DQs wet weight was 55 grams (which considering they were lollis in one-gallon pots with NO VEG time, that's good). So considering they were just thrown in there the last minute I'm impressed they produced as well as they did. As can be expected, the roots weren't really that developed, and hardly even hit the res. I imagine with at least a week or two of veg, their production would increase tremendously.

I totally forgot to weigh the White Widow while it was wet, but I was guess if was probably around 130 grams (it looks like it is a little less than the LA Con, but the buds are actually denser so it might actually weigh more... we'll see when it's dry).

It's all in my dryer box right now.

The other tent has eight Odyssey Clones in it right now... I took them out of the two-liter hempy's and put them each in a one-gallon smart pot. Filled the bottom with hydroton, the rest with Verm/Perl and hooked-up a drip irrigation system to it this morning. Right now since the clones are still young, I'm only pumping 2 ounces of nutrients to them each day. I'll get a journal started on that soon... I'm shooting for 3 ounces dry on that particular grow.
 
12 Grams dry for the Lollis... and 29 grams for the White Widow.

That's about 80 grams (more like 70-75 if I trimmed closer). With that I'm at about .25 grams per watt, which isn't bad for a first grow. This next grow I'd like to get closer to .5 grams per watt of efficiency.

Pics up in a bit... Everything is sealed up and being cured. I let them cure for 12-hours, then breath, then another 12, for the first couple of days. Then 24 hours before breath. Now I will let them sit a full 48 before I open them back up to breath. To be sure everything is night and air tight, I taped up the lids. I figure five day dry, two-week cure should be pretty good.

just wondering bro how long did u let that veg im growing la con rite now and im still vegging was it over a foot?
