First grow ever

Hey everybody,

My name is Dusty and I am new to growing for the most part. Feel free to comment and leave advice for me.

So I should mention I germinated my seeds using the paper towel method a little over two weeks ago. I transferred the first two seedlings into jiffy pots. Out of the two, one looked far healthier than the other so I transferred the entire jiffy pot into a 5 gal bucket after about 1 1/2 weeks.

These pictures are taken 2 weeks after germination.. I feel she (wishful thinking) looks pretty healthy... I have found some spider mites crawling around in the soil so I ordered some Zero Tolerance Pest Control to fight off the mites.

But let me know what you guys think. It's not very tall but it's becoming pretty bushy. I'm intentionally leaving the light about 3-4 inches above the plant to promote a shorter, bushier plant.

I will appreciate any advice/constructive criticism you all may have.

Thanks,

Dusty

do you mind explaining how you can tell it needs more light? the camera i used makes it look dimmer than it actually is

View attachment 2249851 like i said, the camera i'm using adjusts the brightness automatically
Is that a 125watt equivalent or actual? I don't even think they make 125 watt CFLs that are your size and spiral

If it is 125 watt equivelent, which is common, that is a 30 watt bulb

So you have 60 watts of CFL which probably produce something like 2,000 lumens per bulb

4,000 lumens is not enough for that plant. I'd say you need more like 9-10,000 lumens.

With that said, grab another 2-4 bulbs

your absolutely right. 60 watts of CFL.. 4,100 lumens total.

So if I get two more of these bulbs and another dome.. I'm hanging them from above so each dome (with 2 blubs) will hang over half of the bucket.. do you think it will be enough? Im doing a 18/6 light cycle right now.

I think they look pretty good, I have a small T5 that I use and it puts out 4000 lumens and I my grow comes out fine. Of course you could get 2 more and end up with 8000 but I wouldn't say 4000 is no good.

Yes I'd say its enough to get by, 8000~ lumens is a decent amount for one plant

Well certainly its better than nothing, but even outside in the shade you can see 7000+ lumens. Would you want to have a plant that grew in the shade or do you actually want some tangible buds to smoke? :)

Your current setup is fine until the plant gets bigger. It's better to have those two bulbs kissing the plant than twice as many that you can't get close enough to the leaves yet.

And I say move it closer. I try keeping cfls more like half an inch to an inch at most for plants that size.

Ok so I added two 42 watt (2700 lumens each) to my set up. One on each side. So thats a total of 9,500 lumens of light. I was thinking of increasing the hourse to maybe 22 hrs/day.

Do you guys think this is too big of an increase of light?

No need to increase amount of light. 18/6 is perfect. Don't rush the vegging, patience. What spectrum are the bulbs? 2300-2700k or 6500k? Not sure if it's the camera, but it looks like a warmer bulb. If possible, try to get a blue spectrum, or 6500K bulb for vegging.

I have four bulbs: all are 2,700 k.... 2 bulbs are 2,700 lumens located on the sides and 2 are 2,050 lumens located above

Yes, we should have specified that for vegging you need a 6500k spectrum and for flowering you will need 2700k.

The good news is that your lights can still be used, but not yet. Grab some 6500k lights. If you're short on cash then you can mix and match the 6500 and 2700 lights.

If you really don't have any money, then the 2700k lights are better than nothing and just ride it out.

Not too bad, but you could have definitely added some more volume to those buds though
I agree but being limited to space it's enough for my personal use. Being it's a sativa dominant it takes a lot of room, with small indicas I can get a larger harvest. Thanks for the coment.

I agree that at the very least you should switch out one of those 2700k bulbs for a 6500k one, but preferably at least two of them. Keep at least one 2700k bulb just to diversify the spectrum a bit.
