First grow, first journal

OK, so here's the story. Last weekend we had a few friends over to the house for some drinks etc. They were given the plant by a friend who couldn't keep it anymore and they themselves couldn't keep it for some reason either and offered it to us, the offer we accepted with a smile on our faces. A few days later my housemate went to their house and picked up the plant, bringing it here in a box. This is what the plant looked like when we got it:

It was just in a 5L bottle with the top cut off and in regular back garden dirt.

We are a lazy bunch so didn't bother preparing for the plants arrival so didn't know what to do until I found this site a few days ago. Yesterday we put it in a proper pot, with compost and bought a CFL. Then we put it in a closet in my room which I didn't use and this is how it looks as of yesterday (the light is lower now though)

Before yesterday we just had it on the windowsill in the kitchen and left the lights on in there at night. I had put tinfoil on the floor and the walls but was advised to take it down because it causes hot spots. It's under 24 hour lighting too. I know I need more lights and a fan but I can't really afford it.

Tomorrow I'm going to make a reflector from one or two beer cans cut in half and hang the lamp horizontally over the plants. I'll get more pictures up when I do so.

All comments and advice are more than welcome!

Just finished making some changes

But I'm wondering if that first beer can is dangerous i.e. the one touching the ballast of the lamp, it gets really warm so should I remove it so it's like this?

Also, I found this V

Could I use it as a reflector on the walls? It's one of those insulated mats to go camping with

Here's an update

I don't like the look of the bottom leaves, some have yellow spots on them and the bottom ones are curling up too, I found another light in my parents house which I'll wire up later or tomorrow

I'm sure it would work to an extent, but I'd say just get a can of Flat White Latex Based paint. Cheap(under $5 USD) and effective(80-95% reflectivity). Better than mylar imo, and many others.

LATEX based, if not it won't work.

P.S.- Nice looking plant btw, any clue of its lineage? Also, you say it's a female. Aren't your lights on 24/0 right now? Gotta make the flip to 12/12 before sexing my friend.

If you're reffering to the tiny green shoot at the nodes on the main stalk, those are actually new foliage. They'll be tiny leaves soon, and eventually a branch will form.

It say's here you can sex the plant from the pre-flowers

and mine looks exactly like the second picture.

It's going on 12/12 from 6am tomorrow morning and the fan should be here any day now. I don't have a clue what the plant is, I was talking to the guy who gave it to us the last night, he planted 3 seeds he found in a bag of weed and the one he gave us was the only one that survived

Cheers, it's looking much better now then when I first got it, should I cut off the bottom leaves that are drooping I wonder?

I like how if you look at the pics in a time lapse, you can see them looking up more and more everyday. Im just a beginner grower myself, but I would say if you added some light down lower that might help your lower leaves.
My first babies are just under 2 weeks, and Ive messed up sooo much, but they're still alive. I just give that advice from what Ive been reading this past month. You've done a good job. And I hope you get a reward. :)

Yea I do need more light for the lower leaves, I found a fixture and bulb at my parents house but when I wired it up it didn't work, I can't get a close up of the female yokes, I'm just using a camera phone and it gets fuzzy that close up. The fan finally arrived today so that will be going in in about 20mins when the light comes on

the light(s) can be hung vertically, in the corner of the room maybe to offer reflection, and rotate the plant. from the oic it looks as if you have the light hanging from a chain touching the glass ?? anyway you will notice the underside of the plant will start to yellow and leaves will fade and fall. this is normal. you can also "lolly pop". since there is not much penetration of the cfl's. peace and happy growing.
