Hi there,
I want to grow weed for the first time but I'm a little unsure of the best (and cheapest) set up for me.
I want to grow one maybe two plants at a time in a small grow box. They will be sweet seeds speed devil. Short, easy and quick to grow!
The temperature in the room i will have the grow box in is about 50-60f, will plants do anything under these temps.
I was thinking of puting either a reptile heat mat under a plexiglass sheet under the pots or one of the reptile ceramic heaters to raise the temp. A thermostat will be used.Is this a good idea? Or is there a better way of doing it?
Next lights, I was going to use natural daylight flourescent bulbs, will these work and how many will i need for one/two plants?
How much will one plant smell as i have flatmates who dont mind me growing but will complain if there is too much of a smell!!
Last thing, I want to keep the plants fairly short. Would pruning be a good idea or is there a better way for me to keep them short?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks in advance!!:-?

i am also new to growing and i made the mistake of only buying florescent bulbs at first, those are for your veggie plants. depending on how many you are planning to grow an hps would be a great way to flower your plants, to put it into scale im growing 12 plants under my 1000w eye hortilux, but they also make 400w, and 600w. and for keeping them short you can prune them, but also you should look for shorter strains because certain strains can grow up to 12 feet, others only 3. like i said im new as well, just wanted to share some knowledge!

Hi,
So did your plants not grow under flourescsents? I was only going to grow one plant at a time or maybe two to keep it on the down low. My strain says it wont grow higher than 31 inches, I think it's about the shortest you can get!! Thanks mate

50 to 60 F wow thats freezing for your plants. they mostly like it in the mid seventies and not usually much over 80. if your grow box is small i's suggest gettin about 5 42watt compact florecents. cooler colors for veg warmer for flower. to keep the plants short i would keep them as close as you can to the light to minimize stretching. when they get too big for you box i'd gentally bend them over and tie them down. if done right is less stressful than pruning and gives you mutiple colas. and there is no need for an hid with a grow this small. waste of electricity. most people dont consider the cost benifits of smaller compact grows. HIDs aren't for every situation.

I would not worry too much about the dark time temps as long as it is 50+. I have a 12/12 from seed grow going right now and my tent is in a room that gets down to about 52 on occasion with no adverse effects.

Day temps should be at least 10 degrees warmer and any light will put out heat but I dont think you have a heat issue in a 50 degree room.

so would reptile heat mats/ceramic heaters work to get the temp up?
yeah absolutly. if you use the mat just put it on a timer depending on how long it needs to be on to keep the temp up. but if you use the matt becareful you dont fry your roots. they start to cook above 85F. the heater on a thermostat would be the best option probably.

so is my idea of where to put the mats ok? under the plexiglass/perspex or should it go under the pots. Yes a thermostat will be used.

This post brings up a very good point. Root temp is far more important than canopy tent. Like he said you dont want your roots much over 80 at all.

so as long as the roots are warm i should be fine?
optimal temps for your situation will be air about 76 soil temp around 78. the older the plants get the less important it is for the soil to have a high temp. it promotes root growth early on in the plants life.
