First Grow, I have Questions!

Greetings growers, this is mainly aimed at you.

I am 3 weeks into growing this one successful sprout and would like to confirm its sex. Could anyone give the proper procedure for doing this?

Secondly I need some advice on pruning, the very lowest nodes have been removed but I'd like to wait for a second opinion before taking the clippers to it.

Thanks, I hope to keep this thread updated with the grow as it goes. Any help is appreciated.

To find out the sex you have to give it 12 hours of darkness each night unless it is an auto. The darkness will trigger it to start flowering, then you can see if it has male or female flowers.

They look good, do you know if they are auto? How mamy hoirs of light does it get each day?

The packet I got was a bunch of mystery seeds from an old time grower. There is no telling what it might be. I'll be happy if it isn't ruderallis.
Lighting is at 16/8, humidity hovers around 38-45% so it gets watered a bit more often then a normal grow. Also running 4 42watt cfl @ 5900k for this little area.

You will need more lights. You might be able to grow a decent one under four if you have it on 12 hours the whole time but not two. Can you get more light?

Don't worry about pruning. The only cutting you should do is to top it or fim it. It looks like you already topped the big one.

Have a separate grow area for flower in the works. Was a better option so I can keep mothers in veg and do sog with clones. In time anyway. 600watt HPS and MH for finishing in the sog area. Which isn't very large, maybe 3x5 of real area minus fan and duct. (unused shower stall proves to have a use.)

That sounds like a good plan. You could clone a branch off the plant you want to find the sex of and then just give the clone or the original plant the 12 hours then you could find out the sex and still have the mother vegging to make more clones for the sog.

I'm going to give that shot here in a week or so. Hadn't thought of just taking a clone off for sexing. Thanks
For anyone interested I'm growing in 50% coir, 40% forest soil, 5% used coffee grounds, and 5% perlite. Seems to be doing the trick. Had to deal with a little fungus starting due to the grounds but it was easy to manage. Aerating the top soil with a cap full of hydrogen peroxide(kills molds) and a fork killed it once the soil dried. Might be useful info for other new growers.
Currently feeding with minimal chemicals, more often I water with age old sea kelp.

If you veg for about 45 days they'll show preflowers. Looks for balls or a white hair but ignore the two little green shoots by the node. All sexes have those

mystery seeds from an old timer,, my god, I am getting up there in years, and I tell you, some of the strains from back then that nobody sales ,, i wish they were still around, some good ole Tai stick for instance
would be awesome if you knew the strains, and could keep them going, but alas, one can only dream

its been a long while since I have laid eyes on a male plant, I deal so much with clones from stores or people and your gauranteed them to be female,
but the 2 or so I saw back when ,, gosh they just looked differant somehow to me, spindley and scrawnee compared to the girls, I know thats not enough to go on, but has anyone else gotten a sense from a plant that it was male and it turned out to be one

Males usually break ground first and grow the quickest and tallest. Less branching. An attempt to tower over the females when they bloom. I can almost always guess the males.
