You can if you aren't topping. If you're topping youu will have 4 tops and you should lay all 4 of them down.

I just topped three plants and accidentally cut off a piece of new growth on one of them we shall see what happens

No not yet no new growth they already the leaves starting to grow just waiting on them to get bigger.
