well looks like the parents are filing for 100 mill for their child for not being in a safe learning environment. they have every right to every last cent for this. not much could have been done to prevent it. but still this is what states need to have funds ready for. i hope that child gets all the money for college, car, school, house and a future where she never has to do a thing ever again if she so chooses. that is permanent damage no one could ever forget not matter how much weed you smoke.God bless that family with a win of the lawsuit

MERIDEN, Connecticut (Reuters) - A $100 million claim on behalf of a 6-year-old survivor is the first legal action to come out of the Connecticut school shooting that left 26 children and adults dead two weeks ago.
The unidentified client, referred to as Jill Doe, heard "cursing, screaming, and shooting" over the school intercom when the gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, opened fire, according to the claim filed by New Haven-based attorney Irv Pinsky.
"As a consequence, the ... child has sustained emotional and psychological trauma and injury, the nature and extent of which are yet to be determined," the claim said.
Pinsky said he filed a claim on Thursday with state Claims Commissioner J. Paul Vance Jr., whose office must give permission before a lawsuit can be filed against the state.
"We all know its going to happen again," Pinsky said on Friday. "Society has to take action."
Twenty children and six adults were shot dead on December 14 at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The children were all 6 and 7 years old.
Pinsky's claim said that the state Board of Education, Department of Education and Education Commissioner had failed to take appropriate steps to protect children from "foreseeable harm."
It said they had failed to provide a "safe school setting" or design "an effective student safety emergency response plan and protocol."
Pinsky said he was approached by the child's parents within a week of the shooting.

Everything you said is true but $100 million is way more than anyone could ever needin their lifetime. It's excessive, and no amounted money will ever erase the trauma inflicted on the children and their families. Money sure does help, but it doesn't fix everything. Sure government money goes to silly places but as you said, thee wasn't much that could have been done. We can't predict what people are going to do with their guns as long as they have them to play with and we can't have kids in schools being scanned like they going into an airport and the whole building operates like a maximum security prison. People hate the idea of a police state and over the top health and safety rules but when someone is endangered they are all for it. It was tragic and unfortunate but sucking money out of people, especially in this economic climate doesn't fix anything.

That is not to say I do not care about the child's trauma, I know all about trauma and the lasting psychological damage having experienced a fair amount of it myself, but can't be draining resources to try and make up for it.

agree with most, maybe it is excessive, but for the trauma 100 mill seems right. there are tons of billionairs out there who are 50 yrs old. it will help, it cant fix it, but she will never have to worry about anything. it wont take it away or make it right. but after mine( cant call it trauma really cant) i understand the needs of HOME ,CAR, and worry. she'll never have to wonder where home is or how she'll get around. the rest of the money will be there for when she really needs it to just get out of the country or go somewhere and relax. once your childhood is damaged thats it. for life you will be looking back wishing to be like every other kid with the normal go to school with hardly and issue and getting the picture perfect grade school, middle, highschool, college life. even if it is a little bit of what the person makes it. though it does seem like allot more than she needs. i still have to say it will take care of every bit of relaxing she will want for the rest of her life. granted she stays emotionally stable.

No.......................did you even read the article?

The kids heard the gunshots over the intercom.

That's it.

Kids all around the world hear much worse all the time and don't get shit for it.

This lawsuit is a joke.

I totally get you silas but there are millions of kids out there who have lived through that and much worse. $1,000,000 is a life changing sum of money, let alone $100mil. I totally hear you though, what you said about having that security etc but there are so many kids out there that could apply to and it seems all the money in the work dcouldnt fix it. So many kids that should also be 'entitled to' large sums of money. I feel almost tempted to claim some myself, would certainly help with my medical issues and the shitty early childhood and mental health problems on top of financial issues... But there is very much a culture of entitlement, I could claim and get me a tidy sum of money to cover medical costs and parking fees for the hospital but I couldn't sleep at night with guilt when it's no one person's fault. It's all about finding fault. And the person whose fault it is is dead already

Indeed. Also, let's say this actually goes through. Who gets the money? Just one kid? Then what happens when all the other kids want their own 100m?

Also, lets say just the first lawsuit goes through. Where will that 100m come from?

The school? I know of no school, or even entire school SYSTEM, that has 100m.

So, that one kid is going to get 100m and then all the other kids get kicked out of not just that one school, but ALL the schools in that entire system because there's no more money? Those teachers aren't showing up for free..................

How is that even remotely "okay"?

Wonder if any change will come from this or will people still sit around talking about what could have been/be done differently.:-?

Either schools will have to be run like maximum security prisons and all innocent people walk around armed to the teeth or people accept tougher gun laws or we fight to take them out of everyone's hands. But everyone wants power, their right to own a gun and their freedoms, but they also want to be safe... From people who also want freedom and guns. What's that line from Spiderman? With great power comes great responsibility. Every guy owner potentially carries lives in their hands be they a bad person or a good person who just goes nuts one day. He could have stabbed those kids but not nearly as many and from long range as the damage caused by a gun.

I doubt the compensation /lawsuit culture will ever change, though of course, there are times when such action is really needed.

Should places be insured In case of disasters/terrorist attacks? It's not their fault...

I just looked to see if 9/11 victims/families received compensation, but I suppose that is different as the family has lost a member bringing in income, funeral costs and so on., despite the money not being able to bring them back or soothe a broken heart. That's different to people trying to milk a situation though.

Then I thought about soldiers who put themselves in the line of fire. I think they should have their medical costs taken care of and aftercare should be better, a good pension etc but I had no idea they get individually compensated for every injury now. It's an occupational hazard.

Sandy Hook was a tragedy the school should take no fault for. Now if I wanted to make a claim for things that have happened I wouldn't even know WHO to try and point the finger at/extort money from.

Public schools can be a mixed bunch. Some are really dangerous and rough and some turn out the grades but the kids are unhappy and don't have a rounded education. I went to private school from 11-15 (scholarship/bursary) but learned little I couldn't have by myself and the kids just had more money than sense. The public school had far tighter security than the private one which was in a state of disrepair and being broken into a lot (they were tightwads)

I think you have to judge every school independently on its merits and take the alumni and local area into account.

For sure... Texas schools, in general, are kind of shitty. Or so I am told.
I need to start looking into all of that.

i don't think money is the issue ant they should have asked for a billion dollars IMO
NO AMOUNT OF MONEY would make up for losing a child

Such a complicated business. I still feel indebted to my parents for all the research and visits and entrance exams and interviewing processes they had to hel me with just considering a school let alone the final administration process. Big decisions but ultimately a school experience could just be what the child makes of it depending on circumstances. It's no small task.

I wish all parents everywhere the best with the erupts business of sending their child to a good school, or finding them a place at school at all..

MySunnyBoy, if no amount of money would make up for it, why are they asking? Parents the world over have experienced the pain of losing a child, which NO parent should ever face, and my prayers go out for the void in their lives and hearts that must torment them every day. But not every parent seeks monetary compensation for it, or such an amount that most people could never hope to see in their wildest dreams, not just covering things like funeral costs and counselling or even a family vacation to help keep their minds off it all.

Is this lawsuit about parents who lost their child or their child was simply there though..

I don't mean to sound I sensitive but money doesn't fix everything .. It helps, but extortionate amounts of money fix nothing.

I bet these people are gun control nuts too. Pussies, lol!

Well, they might do, seeing as parents often say they could do a better job themselves, attack teachers, complain about the school catering and tasting systems. The public education system regularly fails even the most gifted and talented students..But we all need standardisation for some things... Like education and qualifications.

It is sad to see people ride/milk this tragedy. We are forgetting to honour the dead and respect the grieving parents arguing about other issues arising from the incident...
