First Time Growing. Hoping for some critique on progress so far...

Hi All,

This is my first time growing. Bought 5 feminized Northern Lights seeds. 3 of which didn't make it past seedlings (not sure if problem with seeds, or my methods, but thats the way that cookie crumbled).
Currently have 2 plants growing.
Both are at a little over 4 weeks vegetative.
As you can see from the image, one is MUCH taller than the other, even though both have been growing the same amount of time with the exact same treatment. The one on the left is about 9" tall, the one on the right is about 4"

My concern is, from photos and videos ive seen online, my plants dont look nearly as dense/leafy as others i've seen at this stage of growth. The stem on the taller one seems like it might be a bit too thin. I could be worried for nothing here, but as i have 0 prior experience, im not too sure.

So i was hoping that some of you might be able to critique how the look to you so far based on the info provided. Do they look healthy/ok and i shouldn't worry too much. Do they look weak/pathetic?

Any input appreciated.

Thanks!

What kind of light are you using and how far away? The one is stretching towards the light it looks like. Put something under the small one so the plant tops are same height and lower lights. If these are under cfl get that light right on them 2" away. How big of pots are you using? Have you thought about training? Personally I would top above the second node. I usually do this when I have a plant about 5-6 nodes on it. It will promote the lower shoots to grow and bush out a little for ya. Also a trick you can do is bury the stem when you transplant to bigger pot. You can even out the two plants that way. Also I would top first give it a few days then transplant to limit stress. Also look into LST. Your plants are fairly young but looks like lighting is the first issue you should address. Tell us more about your setup.

MORE LIGHT!!!

You are stretching them. Dont go off other peoples grows. EVERY grow is different my friend. And plants take time sometimes. Patience is a huge part of growing. If you dont have it, quit now. Add more light and give it a week or so and you will notice a difference. What type of lighting are you using? Also how old are your plants??

ive got two round fluorescents one at 32W, one at 40W. i know i need a stronger light source, but i had this on hand already and thought i would start with that, and if they didnt grow we'll i would upgrade. probably time to upgrade. Its probably about 10" away right now.

Good idea! Ill prop up the smaller one for now to get it even with the tall one. And ill move the light down yo 2" away.

These are 1 gallon pots.

Had to google this. Also a good idea!

Had to google this also. I think i need to learn a bit more about how this works exactly so i dont mess anything up.

Thanks rwbrock! Ill work on implementing your suggestions

No problem with patience :) Just wanted to have some feedback since i have no one i know to turn to about these kinds of things.
Will definitely work on better lighting for them
Both plants have been growing for a little over a month.

definitely more light, as many 23w 6500k bulbs as you can and around 2-3 inches away, and pot them up to at least 3 gallon pots and you'll be sailing. with good soil of course

Quick Update.

Transplanted the taller of the two to another 1 gal container (thats all i have at the moment) to bury the stem a bit.
Propped up the smaller plant to be closer to light source.
Lowered light source so its closer.
Also took a better pic of light source, and latest changes.

Will look into getting better lighting and larger pots sometime this week.
The soil im using is FoxFarms Ocean Forest.

Good job...Now would you considered topping the taller plant to even them out?

Thinking about it. My concern is this though: the shorter of the two plants has actually been growing the exact same amount of time, in the same environment, being treated the same way... But has grown to only half the size of its sister. I'm concerned there might be something up with that plant, and maybe no point in having the other plant wait.

U shouldnt b trying to grow two plants w those lights....hell I wldnt even try to grow one...ur wasting ur seeds

U dont have enuf light to sustain healthy vigorous growth......these plants take a lot of light to do well man...im using this on one little plant...20130711_174740.jpg...thats 6 23 watters and one 42 watter....at 3-4 inches away...and ill double that to flower

I used 3 40w clfs for 4 plants worked fine for me. And before I put them outside I was only using 1 40w cfl.IMG-20130506-00506.jpg

You need some more light tho by the looks of it. And maybe put some mylar or tinfoil in their to bounce the light off the walls. Is that setup you have in a shower?

Not a bad idea your doing fine for your first grow and you will learn a lot. Most people don't like reading a lot so don't do enough research. Go into the forums and look at all the sticky's, lots of them might take you 3 or 4 minutes to read but its vital information.

Thanks Everyone! MORE LIGHTS! :-D
I actually read through all of Jorge Cervantes' Marijuana Grow Basics book before starting, which definitely went into a great amount of detail on light set ups.
This was my first attempt, and more of a "what the hell, ill give it a shot" kind of experiment, so i definitely went a bit loose with my follow-through.
I had those lights on hand and figured i'd see how they did.

Since the consensus here is that more light is what i need, thats i will be doing!

And yes, i have it set up in a shower, its a bathroom in the basement that almost never gets used and it was the best place to set up the grow, is already a small self contained room, and has a window for easy ventilation (especially for flowering when the aroma is supposed to get good), running water for easy watering, etc.

An used washroom in a shower is a prime spot I would say. Most bathrooms have shitty ventilation fans but its still good for air flow your plant would love you if you left a fan on. Most households lamps and light sockets can hold up to 60w. And 40w light bulbs are not that expensive to purchase. Make sure you get cool coloured cfls more of a bluey light that's needed for vegetative state.

um cfls are fucking amazing for veg but not those my friends u need at least t5 to get plant the are not stretching warped or taller then or shorter then the others every single cfl post i see is working backwords people are buying 15 fckn cfl for a couple of plants and all these extension for the bulbs just go out and spend 100 bcks on a 24in t5 i use sunblaze and u will do much better then 20 god damn cfl ......and for flowering i would not rec cfl u get stretched fluffy weak as buds ....im fairly new to growing also nut from exp cfl suck they do some of the job but could never complete the job properly....ii have 600whps 400wmh and my t5 and my plant look fckn amazingi would never compare to cfl. remember its all about light medium pot size and nuts.... i would sugg fox farm for begginers

ok I am a first time grower I have some beautiful plants its only july and I have some massive buds but this morning 1 of my plants buds were stretched . What happened ? and is it to late to save it ?
