First time lollipop assistance

I have two large plants growing in the ground that I need to defoliate a bit. Looking at the pictures, the lower branches I’ve been thinking about removing just worried I’ll shock the plant. Just looking for advice on if I should lollipop or just defoliate the hell out of the plant the bottom seems to be in need of it. Trying to avoid any powdery mildew issues

I would take the bottom 2-3 ft out, Not all at once but over a week or so.

Yes, definitely the bottom branches.
And if you feel adventurous, the small undeveloped stuff growing into the centre of the plant can go too, IMO better air circulation for when things get damp.
Have fun.
