First timer questions

Heyy guys, I've been looking around and find this site. I've heard of Fox Farm soil, Harvest Moon, etc. Which is the best basic to start with?
Does each seed need it's own potter? Do different strains need different things?
I have a two walk in closets that are being able to be grown in.
If you could include links to specific things as well. I'm also trying to figure out what lights to get and what "nutes" or whatever are, and how they're needed and made.

keep it simple, keep it bio. No time release shit

Start with 'seedling' soil for first coupe of weeks. pot them up to normal bio soil, this will contain enough nutes for another week or so. Then start feeding with the water

fox farms ocea forest is a really good product, dont need to add anything for 2-3 weeks. yes, different strains often different needs. start seeds in a wet paper towel in a plastic container, keep it moist. when the tap root comes out plant a 1/4 inch deep whith tap root down and spray soil until saturated. dont pour water as it will shift everything around. each sprout should be in its own container. for flowering you will want 400w hps for every 4-6 plants under 2ft tall(fewer for taller). botanicare products are a pretty good line up and fairly gentle on your plants.

I cannot recommend the paper towel method of germination even tho many people have success with it. You can damage the roots which can lead to problems weeks later. We always germinate straight into soil. If the seeds don't like it, then they are crap seeds

OInly damage root if your hand fisted........ treat it with the same care you would a baby and you don;'t damage.
It isn't a technique that is at fault it's like most things................ USER ERROR

I am a newbie to growin, and i germinated my seeds by letting them float in distilled water until they sank to the bottom and than planted them in plastic cups with a 75w grow light over top of them. It has been almost a week and have yet to see any sprots. I used miracle grow not knowing then what i know now. But what went wrong here?

I know now that there are better ways to do everything I did, but was i foolish for evan thinking this way would work?

Be patient. The advantage to the paper towel method is you know the seed cracked. The disadvantage...well I broke a tap root on a $10 seed.

Often when planting directly into soil they are being planted too deeply, they want just a few mm of soil covering them. Do not water the soil through, just spray it regularly and keep them warm and damp (inside a propogator with lid or something) forget the light.

People do have good success with paper towel method, as someone said it is usually down to user error, but hey, MrDank isnt ham fisted and as you see, he blew ten bucks just there.

I'm thinking of starting to grow blackjack and ak 47, are those good types?
I will put them in the moist papertowel, or in a glass of water, put them in the dark until they crack.
Then put them root only into a fox farm soil.
Place them in the closet that has reflectors around the plant.
Should I start them out in 3/5 gallon pots or just put them in little cups and then transfer them later?

Here the deal..... The reason the paper towel is so popular (not necessarily the best) is because it allows you to check progress, experienced growers couldn't care less but new growers want instant gratification. Paper towel allows them to check the seeds every hour with little or no harm.

Re Pots, yes put into small pots of about 5cm diameter, let them root well before potting them up. Depending upon what you are growing you usually will have to step up twice..

5cm into 3.5l then into 11l is what I use for example.

I just checked my seeds, and after 2 days i have 1 out of the 4 already is starting to sprout.
