First try with XL Auto Pots. In soil mix with perlite added.

I have problems with under/over watering. I purchased the Auto Pot XL 4 pot system. I can still return it. lol. I won't. So, here is my plan that is open for changes if they make scientific sense and are not too unnatural.
The soil mix - base = 33% (about) each of Pro Mix, dark reed sedge peat and builders' all-purpose sand. I do this by volume rather than weight because the moisture content will be inconsistent. The all-purpose sand has irregular sized grains that are not rounded. With a EWC and a few other amendments that soil worked fine. It was very heavy but drained well. The surface dried out in a few hours after watering which prevented fungus gnats. I now add a good amount of vermiculite to the base to lighten the whole thing up. I noticed that the roots were only growing around the outsides of the pots and very little roots around the tap root. There were totally empty spots where no roots grew. The added vermiculite solved the problem. I grew healthy plants for the most part with only a few reject plants. I'm experimenting with Auto flowers. I'm confident in using my soil as it is now except for Auto Pots.
I sterilized the soil with leftover dry ice from my hash attempt. -110 degrees F should kill any creepy crawlers. Everything else that dies I can add back later. I added about 30% perlite to my soil mix. To the bottom of the XL Auto Pots, I added an inch and a half of perlite. I filled the pots the rest of the way with the soil/perlite mixture. I intend to grow four auto flowers. I started six cultivars so I will have to pick four out of six. Mephisto double grape and sour stomper, Gnome Automatics Black Strap and Ace of Spades, and two freebies from Multiverse Beans. Top Gun from Atlas seeds and White Russian from Errors
. I'm on my third indoor grow but it's really just turned into a continuous grow. I've got germinating seeds all the way up to hanging plants. I'm loving these autos. I haven't tried any of these breeders (because I'm new) but I know one I'll never use again. I Love Green Money. They got mine. Live and learn. Mephisto had no bad reviews and are well known. Gnome Automatics had a good story, and he seems like a breeder who is honest and cares about his product. I'm learning that breeding and genetics matter just as much if not more than growing skills. F-5's or better from now on too. Some people sell some lame F-1 seeds and call it some new stupid name. I say "people" not breeders because they're not.
Any advice from a grower that has been using Auto Pots successfully would be appreciated. I don't want to hear about how much they suck. Any tips or cautions that I should be aware of? Can I occasionally top feed the plants with KNO3 and water? It's completely water soluble so could I add it to the bottom tray. I'm thinking that I shouldn't add anything too the reservoir water. I don't use any other nutrients. There are many advantages of using Potassium nitrate over ammonia or urea derived nitrogen sources. That's a different thread we'll talk about another day.
Should I add a mulch layer? I use rice hulls and have plenty of them.
Cover crop, never tried it. Not sure if it would be worth it for Auto flowers in Auto Pots.
Cannacure for Auto dry/cure. Game changer. Perfect dry cure and smoke.

Has anyone used these successfully? I want to hear from you.
Are there pitfalls I should be aware of?
Have you tweeked the system to make it work better?
Is direct sowing into the Auto pots an option? Why or why not?
What is your approach?
If you hate them or never used them, I don't care. Please shut up.
Autoflowers in auto pots. What are your thoughts.

Floats would get stuck and lines would plug back when they used skinnier tubing. The plants tend to get a lot of buildup in the bottom even with RO and a DWC specific nutrient like H&G Aqua Flakes which is known to work great in Aeroponic systems with fine misting nozzles.

The plants never seemed to actually dry back like they advertise, it was constantly bogged down which is notably less efficient than allowing plants to have a dryback where its not DRY but close between feedings.

The only benefit of autoflowers is that they flower under VEG lighting schedule. Other than that pitfalls are you can't clone plants you like, you spend more money on electricity for the longer light schedule and you aren't going to have any consistency in your crops if your popping seeds every time you grow.

I didn't want to bash them but when I used them all the above issues happened. I was always anxious about the floats not working and usually when I'd check YUP it'd be stuck or a plant wouldn't be as wet as the others. It ended up being where I still had to go into the grow every day to adjust floats or tinker with pots to make sure everything was working.

Top down watering is the most failsafe and consistent way to water plants. Not saying ditch your AutoPots if they're working for you, just giving you an honest first hand opinion on a public forum where you asked.

Thanks. That is helpful. I'll have to keep an eye on the tubes. They provide a larger tube so it shoudn't clog I hope.
Nothing is easy and I'm not expecting total automation. Id like to be able to go away for a week and not come home to dying plants.
I'm glad your honest about it. Do you add anything to your water that was clogging the tubes? I have heard that complaint a few times.
Hopefully if I use clean water and don't add anything I might not have clogging issues.
I'll try them for a few runs and if they are not for me I'll use them for tomato plants. Kind of expensive for growing tomatoes.

I found a pic from 2020. You can see they used to use 1/4" or 6mm spaghetti line. IDK if its still like that, I hope not.

Were there any other problems? Did you correct the issue?
The clogging seems to be the isssue most often complained about.
Cleaning and maintaining the grow room is a daily task for my style of growing anyway so clogs may not be too much of a issue.
I wasn't expecting to plant seeds and come back in 84 days. I wish.
4x4 tent or 5x5 tent? I could use either by the time the seedling are ready for the auto pots.
If wish I could do a fast run and not miss the return window. They are mine now so......

No other issues that I'm aware of, I fixed the clogs by poking the little barbed fittings with paper clips and replacing the lines with new tubing each time. Also, these bugs could be fixed now. I know that they were out for 3-4 years before I bought them though so that doesn't give me a lot of hope for them.

I can hack and DIY stuff to work a little better. Thanks for the info. Sometimes you can improve or repurpose stuff. Then there is total crap. This system seems to be fixable.
I don't want to have to shut everything down if I want to go on vacation. This seems like a good solution.

A stow away in my reused soil. I had a Banana Kush auto that turned out to be a hermaphrodite. I also found a few fully developed seeds in a Banner plant that was not hermed. All plants were feminized autos. I reused the soil from harvested plants to up-pot from solo cups. This little one popped up a few days ago. Healthy little girl with no help from me. In fully charged soil no germination hassels. Mother nature knows what to do. We think we are so smart. It grew by itself really.20230301_091313.jpg

It looks like they addressed the issue. The 2023 grow guide they included boasts an improved 1/4- inch inlet. Aqua Valve 5. I guess there is a four. three and two. Good news maybe.20230301_094818.jpg

There was a sock doing recirculating organic piss with a set up like this. I'm not sure how well it worked because he harvested at least a month early and they didn't look great.

I got a newer set up with the thicker lines, 1/2 inch I think, so no clogging problems. The main issue I have is they never dry out. According to autopot, the plants are supposed to feed when they need, but I've found that they are always soaked. What I've been doing lately is turning the resevoir on for 3 days then shutting it off for 2. Seems to be helping but the damage has already been done. After this disaster grow I won't be using them again anytime soon. Of course I won't rule out user error as it was my first go at it with autopots, but I just don't like them. I picked up an aircube system that will be replacing the autopots. Hopefully you have better luck with yours!

The newer valves are 1/4 inch and the line is 3/8ths. I think the soil must be just right to drain properly and wick water at the same time. I often wonder about user error when I'm trying out some new gadget. To start things off on the right foot I just (finally) ordered a good quality PH water tester kit. All I can do now is cross my eyes and dot my tees and hope for the best. I grow healthy plants for the most part. This might be a new way to screw things up or a good investment. Time will tell.

Harvesting too soon, guilty. I would never put a compost tea or molasses in the reservoir or anything but water. How would you make it recirculate and why? Save money on nutes?
I think I got my growing style tuned in enough to experiment with a gadget or two.

I was told to use coco, which I did, and it definitely didn't turn out good lol.. I've read on here to use soil, I've read elsewhere to use coco.. I'm sure I screwed something up somewhere, so again I won't entirely blame the autopots. I'm sure if done correctly in the right medium with the right nutes, they probably work fine
