first water farm setup

i finally desided to try hydro. so i went to my local hydro shop and picked up a few things. now i have 2 water farms sitting side by side. now i just have to deside whether i want to wait for my seeds from attitude to come in, or take 2 plants out of dirt and put them in the water farms. hmmmmm i hate making decisions some times.

leave the dirt grow alone. Too much chance of harming the fragile roots trying to get them clean. And you don't want to be adding dirt into your new Hydro setup.

thats what i was thinking. my seeds should be here in less then a week. i may end up making 4 more water farms, and just fill my closet will them next grow. after i finish the soil ones.

Leave the soil ones be. Hydro can be tricky, it has a way of throwing curveballs. At least if you have some nice soil grows going you have some herb in case you kill the hydro :) Then once your comfortable get those other buckets and go.

for PH generally 5.8 for hydro is what you shoot for.

good thing i got ph down at the hydro shop, mine is 7.5 last i checked. what do i need to watch the most with a water farm setup? i have a ph meter and my ppm meter should be here soon. i have starter plugs, so i might wait and use clones from one of my plants. or use 2 bag seed in 2 starter plugs for the first try with it.

i just put 1 lph and 1 cbb to soak. by tomarrow they should be at the bottom of the soda cap with water in it. then i'll put the seeds in starter plugs, to be used on the 2 water farms.

PH is your number one thing to watch. It can fluctuate pretty heavily and if it does you need to be on top of it. A few days of off ph can kill a plant. Once you learn your system and nutes you will most likely get it nice and stable.

kool thank you. i bought a gallon of ph down. i need to buy hydro nutes, the nutes i bought are for soil and coir. my grow says it's for hydro also, but idk. i've been thinking about doing the K.I.S.S method my first time using the water farm. i need to figure out what i'm going to be using for hydro nutes soon. any suggestions on nutes for a water farm trying to use the K.I.S.S. method? best dollar for dollar nutes?

i soaked 1 lph and 1 cbb seed last night. they sunk already, i'll move them to the starter plugs later today.

just added about 10ml of PH down to my water farm to get the ph down to 5.7 i will check the ph later tonight to see if it changes at all. how often should i have to check the ph on a water farm? at what ph should i add ph down to get it back at about 5.8? how often should i do a res change?

update: i put the starter plug in the water farm yesterday. i have timer set to run on for 30 then off for 3 1/2 hours while lights are on, and not running while lights are off. using ro water with cal-mag added. if anyone wants to tag along with this your more then welcome. i'll be keeping the thread in the hydro/areo section updated mostly same name.

while checking the ph level today to adjust it, i noticed the tap root is coming out of the bottom of the net pot. so i added another air pump, this one is attached to a air stone in the bottom of the bucket. that air pump will run 24/7. also timer to run drip ring is set for 30 min first at 5am then at 5pm

res change today. i put about 2 1/2 gallons of water in the spare hydro bucket (after cleaning it). it tested at 5ppm. i added 15ml of cal-mag brought ppm up to 261, then added karma 10ml brought ppm up to 319, then 10ml grow brought ppm up to 483. the ph tested below 4ph. ph pen is junk from dropping it in the res the other day. so i have the little bottle with drips to test. i added 12 drops of ph up to get the ph in between 5.0 and 6.0.
