Fixtures with Glass Covers

I have a HID fixture with a glass cover. I removed the glass but the glass seems to block the heat so the light can be put closer the the plants. But what happens to that heat blocked by the glass? It leaks out from the fixture into the room right? So the overall heat released into the room is not affected but the light can come closer. No? :)

Help please, what's up with glass covers? Do they have any effect on the efficiency of the light?

Thanks

Its glass made to let all the light through, not window glass, just plain tempered safety glass. You are right, there is still heat given off and its going into your room. The glass is there to protect the bulb from impact and liquids, it also reduces the convected heat, but lets most of the radiant heat through.

In short, yes you can get the plants closer with the glass in place.

Well, unless the fixture has venting, having the glass installed will postpone the heat into the room. The glass and fixture its self will radiate the heat into the room.
