FLIR vs Thermal Imaging

I'm starting a room in my attic and I am totally paranoid about these heat cameras. What can I do to not get caught?

I want to use a 400w HPS but maybe CFL's would be more stealth. If I line the roof with good insulation will that work?

Has anyone ever rented a camera to test?

Can cops in Canada use FLIR to get a warrant?

Also is there an attic growing tread on this site? I used the search but didn't find anything.

It's not hard to beat the eye in the sky. They are basically looking for a couple of things. If you vent to the outside they are looking for heat plumes. This can be easily defeated by venting to a different room in your house or through a gas water heater flue or chimney. They are also looking for unusual surface heating on the roof (attic grows or people venting hot air to the attic). Also poorly insulated homes may heat up on the exterior walls. These are mainly a concern if you have a large grow. If you are running less than 2000w you should be good. Now if you are growing in your attic some special precautions need to be taken like thoroughly insulating the roof or the area where the lights will be. FLIR cannot see through walls! If you need anymore help feel free to pm me or drop me a visitor message. :leaf:

If its as simple as it is in that video id be happy as i dont vent to the outside anyway - im just worried that the technology that they use gets better

In my area its not the police you gotta worry about, its the local gangs. They have somehow got there hands on £15000 thermal image detector and they simply drive around lookin for abnormal heat from houses, units, warehouses etc robbing anybody they suspect is growing. I know of 5 people who have been robbed in the past few weeks. Its made front page news here so just goes to show that whatever it is they are using works, quite scary really..

no way.... people like that deserve to die, and it only adds to the already bad image of drug users and dealers, grow your own - smoke it yourself or sell it to your friends - end of story.

one way to beat FLIR cameras is to strategically place high powered flood lights in front of the exhaust hole. it will make the heat signature from the exhaust seem like the heat signature from the light. they sell metal halide and HPS floodlights at hardware stores, pretty cheap too..... another is to vent into another room, or hook it up to the dryer vent..... any of these can work....

and FLIR can detect even the most miniscule changes in light, but for our purposes, they look for extremely hot heat signatures from the roof, caused by big grow lights, or the vents.

don't worry too much about FLIR if you're careful about keeping your grow a secret, if you take care not to throw any incriminating evidence in your own trash, if you do not let police into your house for any reason, use a untracable prepaid phone, and any other method to remain under the radar, you'll be fine.... FLIR is not enough for a warrant, so yeah, stop the paranoia...

I dont know much about the 2 types of detectors but I do know that if you cover the complete grow area in a pvc type called 'chopperstopper' you should be pretty safe :)

I know they are scum!! I have a good friend who works in the fire service who uses a similar detector to the ones the gangs use and he has said i can borrow it once i have finished building and insulating my space.....will be interesting to see what shows up, for peace of mind if nothing else!
