For People That Know A Fair Ammount About CFL's

Ok so i decided i was goign to use cfl's

Went down to woolworths the only lights they had were 20watt General Electric eco ones, giving of 1200 lumens so i got 2.
However when i got home i then was not sure if they were even cfl's as they didnt state if they were cool white or warm white ect..or that number like 2700k...

today i went to wickes and got 2 42watt ones and a 28 watt one

the 42 watts are 3060lm and warm white 2700k

the 28 watt one is 2050lm and just says white (3500k)

i currently have two 3 day old plants that have just got there first set of leaves this morning...out of all the lights ive got what ones would you recomend?

None of the shops ive been in around hear have had any cool white ones :(

you need to go back and get the "daylight" not soft white or warm white... they should have some at any tool place like homedepot even walmart.. not sure what you're locals are but the key thing is day light... they will be brighter and closer to a white blue almost but very very white

Yeah im currently using the 2 20watt ones cause they were the first ones i got and the plant needed light asap.

Cant it damage the plant using warm light on it before flowering starts?

could someone list exactly when i should use what sort of lights cause im not 100%

Dayslights - 5000K/6500K = Veg Stage

Soft/Warm Whites - 2700K/3500K = Flowering

Personally mixing bulbs doesnt do any harm. Ive done it for my current grow and the plants seem to love the CFLs even more

cheers mate, so how many of what bulb should i use for veg?

or does it not make any difference..is it all based on how long the lights are on & of for?

General rule with CFLs is you'd at least want a bare min. of 40 watts per sq. foot in your grow space

Me with the one plant im growing this is what I did

Veg Stage:
2 23w Daylight 6500K
2 25w Daylight 6500K
2 27w Daylight 6500K
1 42w Soft White 2700K

For flowering now
2 42w Soft Whites 2700K
2 25w Soft Whites 2700K
3 32w Daylight 5000K

Yeah thanks for that, i will try and get it near that.
My grow space is 1ft 7 wide and 4ft 5 long and 5ft 10 in height

all i did was stick w/the daylights.... i started w/a single t5 light.. after they got bigger i added 1 95 watt cfl then i added a 125 watt... so i was running the little t5 1 95wt and 1 125wt...the 95 broke so i replaced it w/another 125 watt.... before veg i added 8 (4 on each side running up and down) small 40 or 65 watt daylight cfls the little walmart ones... then during the move to an enclosed box i broke one 125 watt so i replaced it w/ 1 125 watt redspectrum 2700k and that brings us to current...

1 125 watt 6200 cfl
8 40 watt daylight cfl
1 125 watt 2700 cfl

the main thing i wana be clear on is that it is ok to use the warm lights for vegging?

the closest to light i got to cool white is the 28watt one thats 3500k

i was getting a bit worried as i have only been using the warm white bulbs on the plants and didnt know if it was doing them more harm than good.

ill just hook up a few more then and keep looking for the 4500k+ ones

cool spec makes for SMALLER AND MORE COMPACT PLANTS, tighter nodes, but less plant growth all together. warm spec encourages EXCELLENT GROWTH AND VIGOR, but will cause stretch. add warm and cool and you get fast growth rate and great vigor, and tighter bushier plants.

this is why FULL SPECTRUM LIGHTING IS IDEAL FOR INDOOR GROWING.

the sun is not warm spec, it's not cool spec. it's full spectrum.

Yeah i will still try and get hold of the daylight ones and cool ones but i just wanted to know for now if my plants were still doing ok.

I dunno about all that Ive done 3 CFL grows each a bit differ and when I did daylights for veg and then cools for flowering the buds were airy

When I did a mix all around they grew much much larger and compact

BTW the whole point of Daylights and Cools is the spectrum that a plant needs which is Red and Blue even though a sun has all a plant doesnt take the whole spectrum in just the red and blue hue of it

Where do you live that they still have a Woolworth's, didn't they go out of business in the early 90's?

P.S. any and all lights work, the more the better. Just watch your temperature, CFLs especially the cheaper ones run a bit on the hot side.

lol woolworths are everywhere in england i think
( ive never really ventured out of the south, why would i want to go up north it looks like a shit hole lol)

I think its amazing how i can have the lights on for 18 hours and still hold them by the tip of the bulb lol!

Im aiming for about 80k lumens by the end of veg

just get your hands on some Envirolights there like 125w and pretty cheap I see lots of you UK guys using them why not invest into some? makes it tons easier to reach that goal then just a whole slew of 23watters you know.

I learned that myself too now I have 8 105w CFLs
