you are smoking anyways why not hold it?
Standard neuropsychological tests, with known sensitivity to mild brain insults, included speed of visuo-motor responding, speed of language comprehension, response inhibition, and visual and verbal attention and recall tasks. Results indicated that the breath-hold divers performed tasks within the average range compared to norms on all tests, suggesting that 1-20 years of repeated exposure to hypoxemia [an abnormally low level of oxygen in the arterial blood] including multiple adverse neurological events did not impact on performance on standard neuropsychological tasks.

. The average breath-hold time was of five minutes and 35 seconds. The longest was of six minutes and 43 seconds and the shortest was of four minutes and 41 seconds.
2. The marker for brain damage, S100B, rose in seven of the nine divers.
3. The controls showed no change in S100B.
4. On average, S100B rose 37% within ten minutes after the apnea ended.
5. S100B levels returned to normal within two hours for all the participants.
6. The divers showed signs of asphyxia, that is, blood oxygen levels fell, while carbon dioxide levels rose.
According to a new scientific study, holding your breath for even a couple of minutes significantly increases the number of markers for brain damage in the body. However, the scientists who made the find say, the S100B protein seems to disappear shortly afterwards, which leaves some questions as to whether voluntary apnea (holding your breath on purpose) can cause severe and long-lasting effects on the human brain. Other details of the new investigation appear in the latest issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology.
The average person holds their breath for a minute or less! unless you really struggle to hold it longer! holding the smoke in while holding your breath is going to be no different than taking another hit! After you take a breath your lungs only supply oxygen to the blood stream for about 15-30 seconds.
The only reason not to hold your hits longer is because your lungs are no longer supplying the blood stream and the smoke is just settling on the in side of your lungs. Sure you might get brain damage if you are doing it while holding your breath for 5 min!
