Found a Baby Deer

Awesome man you are to take on the new baby...

Saddest thing to come upon a dead animal that has a child near by... many times in Alaska I'd see a wreck between a mother moose and a vehicle and the majority of the time the calf moose would be with her, can't imagine what suffering they would be feeling.

Some of you might know what I do for a living from my grow journal but for those of you that don't, I pick up roadkill(deer) for a living. I had to respond to a report yesterday afternoon and found a newly born baby fawn, sadly I also had to pick up it's mother.

I've been feeding it milk replacer for the last day and it seems to be drinking better with every feeding. Hopefully I'll be able keep it alive and healthy and eventually return her to the wild or keep it as a pet.

Here's a few pics of her with one of my barn cats that slept next to her last night.

Awesome! My uncle had a pet fox he named Rosy. He found her near a barbed-wire fence apparently abandoned. Then I had a rabbit named Peter that we caught at a lake. I'm pretty sure we ate him though my grandpa said he ran away. Deer are pretty common here too, hanging in peoples yards and even keeping my mom away from her car one day. I rarely get to see the babies though.

I got her to eat an entire bottle this morning which is pretty good considering it was on her own.

And for the guys that keep bringing up eating it, my freezer is already plenty full of meat from animals I didn't have to kill myself.

Here's a few pic from just a little while ago.
It has bonded to you as its mother, and your dog I can see has taken a liking to it too. More than likely your dog is going to consider it his also.

I would not tell very many people, because the game warden will find out and more than likely take her away.

If that happens they will euthanize her.

You have a great experience ahead, enjoy it. And get some hard candies, deer absolutely love them.

Because of my job and where I live I don't have to worry about the DNR so much, it's kinda nice.

I have a pretty decent amount of land so it'll be somewhat ok as it gets older, a pen might need to be built for hunting season.

I'm going to be picking up goat milk later and see how she likes that, right now I'm feeding her medicated powder because I'm unsure whether she got her mother's colostrum.

420god, you are one amazing person !!! I hope life is just as good to you and your family as your being to this fawn.

Please keep us updated on the fawn's progress.

Keep up the amazing work.

I am so impressed !!!!

When I was about 12 we had a fawn that dad brought in from the hay field. He had accidently killed the mother. Being that we milked cows, the fawn took to cows milk no problem.

My dog and him were best friends, they would take turns chasing each other. Buttons was his name and he loved hard candy.

But as he got older, when he would want to play he would rear up on his hind legs and swing his hoofs.

One day the game warden stopped by and said he heard we had a pet deer. He was nice about it and said I don't want any complaints when this deer gets horns and starts charging.

As the story goes Dad said one morning he seen it run off with some other deer. "But that is the same thing he said about my dog too"

It was fun and a great learning experience, but I would never advice anybody to do it.
That's sooooo sad! D;

It's not doing a whole lot but sitting around right now.

She's definitely drinking better and seems to be putting on weight.
