Freebase or free base refers to the pure basic form of an amine, as opposed to its salt form. The amine is usually an alkaloid natural product. Free base is commonly used in chemistry and pharmaceuticals to describe the unprotonated amine form of a compound.
Most alkaloids are unstable in their pure form and are often stored as salts. The salts usually exhibit greater water solubility. Common counterions include chloride, bromide, acetate and oxalate. Because of the ubiquity of chloride salts, formed from the reaction of the amine with hydrochloric acid, these amine derivatives are known as the hydrochlorides. For example, compare the free base hydroxylamine (NH2OH) with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH3OH+ Cl-).
The term "freebasing" refers to a method of deprotonating the common hydrochloride salt form of cocaine sold as a street drug to prepare it for smoking. Depends, freebase of what?
Freebase cocaine- sure you can smoke it, probably wouldn't want to bang it.
Freebase heroin- smokable, bangable.
Freebase MDMA- Probably caustic.
Freebase is really only a term when the appropriate molecule is referred too.
Anytime someone is talking freebase, its usually cocaine, and its almost always a solid. Although an oil at higher temperatures.

Or are we talking about freebase methaqualone? It turns to a hydrochloride once it hits the stomach but the effect lasts much longer and it seems stronger. Of course considering that there is more of the chemical and less of the "salt" I suppose it would be stronger. By what? about 12 percent or so? Say, does anyone know how to turn methaqualone hydrochloride into a free base?

In pretty much every drug you have a nitrogen atom as part of the molecule. In an acidic enviroment this atom will get protonated, causing the molecule to get a positive charge. It will then form a salt with a negatively charged ion (the anion of the acid). So hydrochloric acid will for the hydrochloride salt, sulfuric acid the sulfate salt, etc. The freebase is just the nonprotonated molecule, which is called a base because it will bond with a proton from an acid. Freebase drugs typically vaporize more readily than salt forms and are better for smoking, but are usually not water soluble enough to dissolve a dose for injection in neutral water. They will dissolve readily in an acidic solution.
@Ellis Dee you can't inject freebase heroin without dissolving it in acid, and the same process can be used to make freebase coke injectable.

From what I understand heroin very quickly deprotonates in the bloodstream, its just the freebase doesn't dissolve in water readily so its hard to get an injectable solution.
Sure you could dissolve them in an acid, but they wouldn't rightly be freebase molecules anymore.

If for whatever reason you want to bang crack, mix it up with lime or lemon juice. then filter it like normal.

Never ever ever inject lemon juice. It leads to all kinds of infections. Instead use citric acid or ascorbic acid or white vinegar to dissolve freebases in water. My veins hurt just thinking about that.
@Ellis heroin doesn't deprotonate in the body (it doesn't even have an acidic proton, an alkoxide or something with a similar pKb might be able to grab one of the protons on the 7,8 double bond or the one on the stereo center next to it or one off the aromatic ring, but that's lab conditions and would probably destroy the molecule anyway), the acetyl groups hydrolyze to form 6-monoacetyl morphine and then morphine. The base will not dissolve in water without an acid.

I won't be deluging you with my resources. But just think.
Certainly there are benzo's that can be injected with the correct 'solvent', thats all we require. And the freebasing of molecules in the body is necessary for their action. Salts just change solubility, and in so doing, changes their perceived effects and effectiveness.
Salts are useful when one doesn't like needles.
