Very brief history.

I am male and very early 40's

Suffering with l4, l5, S1 broad herniation, buldging and some facet joint pain. Started in 2019 after an injury in work.

I have been to 2 Neurosurgeons and multiple GP's. My pain specialist offers more tramadol or botox injections/ nerve ablation. I have had multiple sessions of laser treatment and physio therapy. I have practically lived with a tens machine strapped to me almost every day, burn type marks and blisters from the pads being on for hour after hour.. day after day. The consultants simply took my money and didn't offer much (imho) in return, genuinely.

I was prescribed 180 tramadol, 30 diazepam and 30 lyrica per month.

I had no choice but to stop taking the medication. Without going into it deeply, I suffered massively from tramadol. From insomnia, constipation, nausea, dry mouth, sweating, agitation, very bad anxiety (I honestly didnt know what anxiety was, I now sympathise to no end and have a deep respect for anyone dealing with it, I had no idea how badly you were all suffering) mood swings, ideation, chronic tiredness and the list could go on and on and on....

The pain is life changing and debilitating, even though their appears to be nothing that can be done for me outside of injections or pills.

I have very good health insurance so financial cost of surgeries etc.. was not an issue. I simply am not a strong candidate for any, according to the 2 neurosurgeons and pain specialist.

Anyway, I researched and grew auto plants:
Northern Lights
Sweet Zombie
Ogesus
Sour Diesel

I stopped the medication and started with green dragon. 28g of bud to 2 cups of 80% alcohol in a magic butter machine.

For the first 6 months I was still suffering, slowly dissipating effects from the concoction of pharmaceuticals while I was taking green dragon in a drink around meal times 3 times per day. First thing in morning , afternoon and the late evening. After the 6 months, I simply needed to take it one time per day in the evening with dinner and that was good enough.

Pain and spasms were 100% relieved. I would be high for around 1 hour or so.

30 mins after ingestion it would start
90 mins after ingestion it would peak
Then it would taper off to a relaxed feeling

I would be completely and utterly, 100% normal, in terms of back pain and functionality.

Tolerance changed the dosages a bit and the odd time I would be seriously blazed but I could manage it without much hassle. This happened around 10 times in 14 months of daily use.

Pretty much one night, I took my usual dose, which was 3.8ml , I think it's about 40mg THC , and I was under serious pressure. I was pacing the room, heart rate was really elevated, very heavy feeling in my chest, at times I felt like vomiting (but didnt) and I felt the same strong high as usual at the same time. At times I felt like I missed a breadth or would have a slight numb feeling in arm or cheek for a few seconds. I am assuming this was a bit of a panic attack. This passed in about 40 mins and I was fine.

However, ever since then I have experienced similar symptoms every single time I take it. It has now been 9 months later and still the same effects. I now take 3:1 ratio of CBD oil to THC but I cannot ingest enough to get pain relief. I am currently able for 1.1ml which gets me a little bit high but its way too low for relief.

I have had to go back to pills again to bridge the gap and am suffering in many ways due to it.
1000mg Paracetamol
400mg Ibuprofen
60mg codeine
5mg diazepam
3 times per day.

This dose of pills barely scratches the surface for me. It reduces pain and spasms approximately 40% and obviously comes with a whole list of risks and side effects.

Has anyone experienced something similar to this sudden shift in ability to ingest THC? Are there any more suited strains or tips/tricks for ingestion?

I am in a very bad way, physically and mentally (emotionally fatigued) from the 24/7 pain once more.

Sorry for the long winded and stuffed post but I would be so grateful for any advice.

Either way, if you made it this far. Thank you.

Man, I hate that you are going through this.. life can be pretty hard sometimes, TBH I have no advice to give you as I haven’t experienced this with Cannabis. What I have experienced is the in my opinion hard to titrate Cannabis edibles. Either they don’t work or they are still working the next day lol Maybe try something more in the broad leaf “indica” like old school hashplant style for edibles? Frick, hope you get some relief

You cant vape weed or smoke it? Some people edibles can get them way too high. I made my own topical and tried it it relieved soreness but idk what all illnesses your treating for if those will do anything. Just anything close to surface of skin, the nerves.

I looked up one of those illnesses though, the spine issue it orobably wont get deep enough for. I get flare ups where my spine hurts when moved, like a electric shock of pain. Ive known people with issues there and only pain killers work.

Anyway for the anxiety, I suffer from it being skitzo, its debilitating and weed just makes it worse. I take antipsycotics and it works wonders. I can get as high as I want. Id see if thats not something you should take anyway for that unless its just so you can get high. To me sounds oike maybe you have some mild anxiety that just comes out when super high.

What youre describing are all the sympomts we are purposely trying to feel lol maybe you just dont like it. Im no doctor though I just tend to suggest this if its a problem. Its harder to over do when vaping vs edibles though.

I suffer from anxiety as well. When it comes to edibles I really really buy into CBD and THC blended stuff.
I am even looking into growing some flower with higher concentration of CBD/CBN. .

It might even be a good idea, if you are not opposed to smoking or vaping, keeping a full CBD product to counteract the ready set go nature of edibles.

First I'm so sorry you are dealing with chronic pain. There was once a time I was using edibles for pain control as well. My pain finally healed when medical science caught up with my issues but edible do work but depending on what you're raising you can experience unpleasant side effects.

Adding CBD to balance might help you. Also CBD is good to have on board as it is an anti-inflammatory If so you're good. However Benadryl (diphenhydramine 25-50 mg) will usually blunt the anxiety. So preload (take some) thirty minutes prior to your edible dose and see if that helps. I don't know if you are where it's legal but if it is and THC (the agent for pain control) helps you then speak with your doctor about your anxiety and see if he might give you a little Inderal (propanolol) that you could take prior if the Benadryl makes you too sleepy.

I usually took 20 mg of Inderal for my anxiety from the THC when I was taking larger doses, just for information on Inderal dosing. Do not use any form of long acting, test first with regular duration pills. But that would require a doctor who will prescribe for you. Also if you have high blood pressure you will need to coordinate that depending on the type of B/P medicine.

So my suggestions are:
(1) Go to a Pain Control physician (usually a board cert anesthesiologist)
(2) Take Benadryl 30 minutes prior to ingestion of your THC
(3) Try inversion (separates the intervertebral spaces allowing for better blood flow) twice a day for 15 minutes
(4) Try Inderal as an adjunct to the Benadryl if your pain control physician approves.

I wish you all the best and if you wish to speak more privately holler. I'll have to PM you first because you are too new to PM.

Nota Bene: I am not your doctor and this is merely a recommendation of things to explore with YOUR doctor who will know if they are appropriate for you.

Three years ago I had spinal fusion at C4-C5-C6. My fingers were numb from pinched nerves and the discs were messed up so I had no choice. I was 70yo at the time. The surgical pain and recovery were brutal. The surgeon says I'm all fixed with a perfectly rebuilt cervical spine.

I have constant lower neck pain which radiates across the upper back and shoulders as the day progresses. I've done many rounds of pt with no improvement. The pain clinic wants me to go on percocet. I can't. The constipation is too severe and I want to avoid narcotics. I'd take one in the evening but local pain clinics in AZ won't allow cannabis and they drug test. Studies show reduced need for narcotics but the docs are boneheads.

I get steroid injections every four months which helps a lot for about six weeks and then quickly wears off. I take two Aleve daily and sometimes 1000mg of Tylenol. In the evenings I vape a hybrid weed strain but only at night. I don't want to be buzzed during the day and this avoids building a tolerance. I found that wearing a soft neck collar in the late afternoon helps so maybe a lower back brace would help you but you've likely already tried that. My doc recommended rubbing in Diclofenac Sodium Topical Get 1% which is OTC. He said it's excellent for nerve pain close to the surface. It does indeed help. He said it lasts about 3-4 hours and can be repeated and won't mess with the kidneys since it's not ingested.

Back pain is hard to treat and is the #1 reason for pain clinic visits. I'll be dead in 10-15 years but you have decades of suffering ahead unless you get some relief. I truly understand the physical and emotional exhaustion from unrelenting pain.
