The electric cannon delivers shells over 200 miles at Mach 5

The first firing of the railgun in January 2008, was an historic and spectacular occasion

Think of the electromagnetic railgun as an electric cannon which uses electrical energy instead of chemical propellant to launch projectiles at hypervelocities. First conceived nearly a century ago, the concept was investigated by Germany during WWII, but has really only stepped out of science fiction and into reality in the last 12 months. With shells travelling at Mach 5 on impact, and accurate to within five metres at a 200 mile range, such weapons maximize the damage they do through kinetic energy, and hence don't need explosive payloads. Accordingly, they are ideal for naval warfare as they minimise the risk to warships which do not need to carry explosive warheads or propellants. Earlier this week, the US Office of Naval Research (ONR) awarded a USD 21 million 30-month contract to BAE Systems for the detailed design and delivery of an Innovative Naval Prototype (INP) Railgun. As previously warned, if the Daleks don't get here soon, they'll have a serious fight on their hands.
Under the contract, BAE Systems will develop advanced Railgun technologies including a composite launcher (barrel) that will be demonstrated in 2011. BAE Systems has partnered with IAP Research, and SAIC to develop the Railgun.
One of the greatest potential advantages for the Railgun program is the safety and logistics aspect.Safety on board ship is increased because no explosives are required to fire the projectile and no explosive rounds are stored in the ship’s magazine.
The technology uses high-power electromagnetic energy instead of explosive chemical propellants (energetics) to propel a projectile farther and faster than any preceding gun. At full capability, the rail gun will be able to fire a projectile more than 200 nautical miles at a muzzle velocity of mach seven and impacting its target at mach five. In contrast, the current Navy gun, MK 45 five-inch gun, has a range of about 13 miles.

That crazy! how long till they put that tech into assault riffles? As Im typing this there is another earthquake 5.8 caymans! Doesn't look too bad ATM

As long as the banks don't crack open

Yah, I can't get over the velocity of that thing. No need for en explosive charge inside the shell. It's a mad bad wrecking ball of a weapon. I imagine that if it targeted a Chinese air craft carrier, it would go clean through every deck and hull. The shock wave alone coming in at 3500 mph would be devastating. The steel would shatter like glass.

I have got to have me one of those!:fire:

BTW CJ, good call on the throwback Pepsi. I bought some the other day and it's damn good!:leaf:

Fucking Christ!

Sorry for the name taking. But that is a piece of machinery. Is that a string of plasma at the front of the coffin.

Do you know what it means to be accurate to 5 meter and 200miles away. The projectile probably flattens out to 5 meters, shit.

Blowing my mind.

Peace

I was just sitting on the john thinking about this thing some more and the possibilities. I don't know that scale needed etc but could this be used to get us into orbit? or even from a moon base to mars etc.

Yes, imagine an electric space shuttle launcher which blasts them from the outer atmosphere. Without gravity to impede it.... one can only wonder how fast it could send them ... or at the very least ... probes destined for deep space.

65 miles a second.... on earth.

That thing is insane.I need one to mount on my roof to stop them damn birds from shitting on my broke ass car.

so what would this thing do to a human?
Im guessing like an instant vaporiser thing. Its only a matter of time before we got flying cars and all that other cool shit from futurama

I believe the Earth exit velocity is 17,500 MPH, I wouldn't quote me on that. But its only a matter of time right.

I would imagine if some daredevil did try to get shot out of that cannon in a steel casket, it would get so hot he would melt on the inside.

Peace

I think at that point they would have developed an exoskeleton projectile with life support inside. Vomit bag included....but I think unless there was no gravity at launch, u would be turned into a puddle.

It was funny! But here....this is what you can get right now... minus 3470 mph. It's a full auto BB gun

The first time we saw this Baikal, CO2 powered, select fire BB gun, we were impressed. Now that we've had a chance to plink with it, we are truly amazed! The DROZD is powered by a standard CO2 cartridge and six (AA) batteries to give you the ultimate BB gun. The factory claims 360 fps, but our tests have shown speeds over 450 fps consistently!

Mach 5!!

That's like 3800 mph!

That shell moves 63 miles in ONE SECOND!!
LOL - Check your math.

Come on now. 63 miles per second? Just think for a second how retarded that sounds.

Mach 5 is a little over 1 mile per second.

63 miles per second is 226,800 mph or Mach 297.95 - just a little off. LOL

Ur right.... I stopped at one division when I should have done two for seconds... it's still incredibly fast.... 3500 mph. There is nothing like it ... ever.

And this is just the beginning.

It will make our navy unstoppable.... and we won't have floating powder kegs as ships either.

I remember seeing a video of a cannon on a ship shooting a fat spike at like 20,000 feet per second. . . .

I knew this would become a major technology after I saw that.

What is more incredible is that it is leaving the barrel at Mach 7 (5328 mph). Friction slows it down to a measly Mach 5.

I don't know what is more amazing; the amount of resistance in the air or the fact that it can maintain those speeds for so long without active thrust.

On top of not having a powder-keg, you can fit more shells on the boat in the space that is no longer needed for the powder or travel lighter.

Just wait till they make the rifle version. You want to talk about fierce. With speed comes accuracy.
